Looks like we're actually looking to plan for more than one season. Letting our high earners & Hillcroft disciples to leave, giving Danny breathing space to bring in young, fresh and hungry lads whilst adding in our youth lads as and when needed. Next season won't be easy but I'm very happy with the way this Summer is panning out. The right and only way we could do things IMHO. Just glad it's Danny in charge to oversee it.
Quite possibly the most sense I have read on the BBS for a couple of days. Danny is slowly, quietly creating a squad of young hungry players. I think he has the players ready to come in,but he needs to know how much he can spend on wages, so has to wait till the big earners have gone. I don't have a crystal ball, nor do I have blind faith. Next season will be a real rollercoaster. Who knows what will happen. COYR.
Dunno, we'll see. While there is no need to panic, yet, the squad doesn't have enough depth and experience for anything other than a relegation battle. Lots of us want to see our youth get a chance, but that means bringing them in to the side when they're on form, resting them when that form dips or their confidence takes a battering. As it stands we won't have that luxury, some of the kids will have to play as we don't have the numbers. A couple of injuries and a lot of the kids will have to play, some that may not be ready. That might actually impede their development. We need more players. We've still time to get them, but we're leaving it late. There's been bairning from some on this forum since the final whistle of the final game of last season. Not from the majority though. I think most people were waiting until the world cup wound down and players' contracts expired at the end of June. Once pre-season got under way we thought we'd see a few signings in the first couple of weeks of July. That hasn't happened. That's a bit worrying. Not pull your hair out, bite your nails off, scream and shout worrying, but concerning none the less. There's still time, I still believe there'll be players in before kick off in August, but that first match is getting ever closer.
I agree. I don't think it's the perfect World many think, though. Reading between the lines I reckon we expected significant interest in Cranie & O'Grady which would allow us to get some more business done. That's obviously not materialised, clubs either don't rate them or think we're desperate so are waiting for us to let 'em go for nowt. It looks like we're nearly at that point. I think (well, guess) Danny has said he needs his players in, the Board have then looked at it and thought they'd rather let them go (Steele included) to free up the wages than be stuck with 'em for another season. Whether that works out is to be seen but it looks to be a big vote of confidence in Wilson and allowing us to rebuild.
The big test will come if we are languishing near the bottom come christmas and there is a growing call for a change of manager. Hopefully the board will stay strong and look long term for a change but our recent past shows we dont tend to do that.
The problem is to offload COG, Kennedy and Crainie to free up the salary bill and comply with the new rules. Obviously none of them are though very highly of outside Oakwell or they would have gone by now. When they have departed (hopefully) the Wilson can start recruiting his own squad.
If we are languishing near the bottom in October there will be growing calls for a change of manager. For me if we are playing in a positive have a go manner then stick with it and give him time. More of last seasons dire displays and tactics then it will be time to get rid.
The only problem with that is Steele, crainie and o Grady were our only players of championship quality in my opinion. Letting them go hopefully will free us up financially to replace with equal quality of players on less wages... Basically we are looking for the holy grail and hoping to get lucky
I agree with much of the original post we just need to replace the 4 players we offered contracts to and Luke otherwise it would seem that relegation is quite likely rather than moving forward and I can't see that being part of the long term plan. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Bit harsh on Jennings there but otherwise not too far out - I dont quite get the excitement over Cranie either to be honest I think he is replaceable - Replacing OGrady and Steele with similar quality will be very tough though At least most of the team next season wont be the players that are used to defeat though
I like this thread. Its a right sensible one. We're clearly in a difficult position with those still contracted, but that said if we had stayed up and they were all walking away for nowt on one year deals then people would be going proper mental. I appreciate we may have to let them walk away now for nothing, but that's ultimately because it suits our purpose to do so. Maybe with Steele going we might be able to afford to keep one or two of the others too, adding that quality to the players Danny wants and the young lads. A lean squad of quality players. If we do get rid of all of them Danny will be the first manager in an age who will have the change to completely build his own squad too, unlike others who have always had players they didn't choose or want. Hopefully we give him the time needed to build something.
This is key. I know this forum isn't exactly a 100% proof barometer for fan feeling, but I know full well that if after ten games we're languishing in the bottom half of the table that there will be threads galore asking for a change. I'm stating (again) that I want Danny Wilson as manager for as long as he wants to remain here. Let him build. He did a pretty ok job at it last time.
There has to be some qualification to that - if we are bottom of the table on 21 points next April it would be hard to keep up the give him time argument - especially if he continues to serve the quality of football we had last season but I do agree to an extent - its not the end of the world if we dont bounce straight back up so as long as we arent in a continual struggle again all next and play some decent football season even a bottom half finish should be enough to give him another season - then we have to see -if in 2 seasons time we still are a struggling 1st (or second division site) questions will need to be asked
Planning schmanning. If our results go badly, he'll be out by Christmas Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
All it looks like, so far, is that we do not have enough Wonga. And why so many seem to think that other clubs will come along and offer higher money than we pay to secure our decent players, when these clubs too can offer more than we can to the presumably as good "young fresh and hungry", escapes me. If they aren't to be as good as what we've got, then only one thing will happen... Let's face it - we're offloading (maybe not even selling) our better players cos we're poor. And we're leaping in the dark. Not by any means all DW's fault. But if it is still poor by Xmas we should accept that DW is judged by the same criteria as anyone else. No sticking with something that isn't working. Did he stick with us the last time he was here? Would he stick with us if he was offered a job in a higher league with more money? To quote the cat in the film Watership Down.. "I think not...I think not.."
