It Happened at Barton on HUMBER now when i was a 18 year old i became a member of Birdwell Club and it was there that i learned to play BOWLS, the Crown green Version you have some idea how quickley i learned the annual knock of the club i was drawn against the club captain a Mr Whitley i had 8 start it was 21 up i beat him but did not get much further was soon put in my place that was in 1948, in 1949 i joined the army i never got to play bowls again i left the army got wed and brought up a family of4 2 lads 2 lasses then i came to IMMINGHAM Cleethorpes was the attraction soon wore off i worked at Fisons but got a part time Bus driving job i told the Boss,i would do the sport rins for Nowt,ie Dart ,Bowls,Kids Footy no he said i will give you half a crown so came the day when he said take IMMINGHAM Railway club Bowls team to Barton so off i sets with the team i had not gone far a tap on the shoulder this chap said can you play Bowls driver i had not played for 20 years YES , i said OK he says you are playing for us and your Name is ???????? i could not remember so i arrived at Barton gets to the Bowling gren they you cant play with those shoes they took me to the side of the green and there were what looked like Sandals so i was taking my shoes off NO,NO, you put them over your Shoes so then i was given to WOODS then came the Next shock it was LINK bowling where there are 5 teams of 4 and you play in lanes (you have em on telly) then of these 4 players there is aSKIP ie the chap who tells you where to bowl as the game progresses and he Bowls the last wood well,in the team i was put,no they were not having that they made me Bowl last the game starts i quickley got into it remembering the BIAS they were taken by Surprise How ever the game progressed Barton by the way were the Champions un beaten now as the game came to close our rink was the last, because of me it came to the very last end i noticed all the other team were watching our Game i was the last to Bowl i did not have a clue whos Ball was nearest to the Jack and the players did not want to to tell me what to do or the Barton lot would suspect a RINGER however i sent my woood Down there were 15 other woods round that Jack my wood went and curved gently into the Bowls Gently Resting on the JACK that was the Match winner now i was not allowed to forget it i was not invited to play i never played again BUT when ever i was seen in the street i was called ???????
