That's Rugby Union for you though

Personally I thought that the media were over-hyping things as usual & the Irish response to our National Anthem being played at Croke Park proved it.

Lame egg-chasing fans. You need a bit of abuse to get things going.

Another try for the Irish. Game over. They have been far better than us. 36-13.

By definition you can't "over-hype", but whilst it might have been hyped I don't think you can take away the historic significance of that game being played at Croke Park.
They were Irish rugby fans, the same people who went to games at Lansdown Road and didn't boo, why would they boo because it was in Croke Park? I suspect anyone who didn't think the game should have been played there wouldn't have gone.

    Just cos

I almost got you with stadia! Also I'm not entirely sure that stadiums hasn't entered the language due to frequent icorrect use, but there you go.

Either way, I agree that anyone who felt that the game shouldn't have been there would have given the game a miss.

I have quite a number of Irish friends, living in the Republic, who have absolutely no problem at all with us English. Just goes to show that it's the bigots that shout the loudest.

Empty vessels making the most noise & all that.

    Perhaps so

I know that the OED put things in because they are in general usage rather than because it is correct usage.

I visited Kilmainham Gaol last time I went to Dublin, felt rather embarassed by the fact I had an England t-shirt on at the time even though people were fine with me.

RE: If you dont know the Irish

If you knew your history a little better, you would know that the Black & Tans were sent to Ireland by a WELSH Prime Minister, Lloyd George, with a WELSH Chief Secretary of Ireland, Hamar Greenwood supported by such Conservatives as Bonar Law, a SCOTSMAN. For English you should say British if anything. Remember the English under Asquith's Liberals had supported Home Rule along with luminaries such as Rupert Brooke.

Sean Kelly, who regards the opening of Croke Park to Rugby wrote in the 'Irish Examiner' that Dermot McMurragh invited the English to Ireland in 1169. For 'English' read 'Normans, Bretons and Welsh'. 'Strongbow' is the nickname of Richard Fitz Gilbert, Earl of Pembroke, a French speaking Norman. Perhaps it needs to be pointed out that the Normans had subjugated the English aftr Hastings in 1066, ruthlessly eliminating the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy.

The English were as capable of subjugating Ireland in 1169 as they are at present capable of winning rugby matches (cricket matches, soccer matches, tennis matches etc.).
