Is it time to shut the January transfer window for good. Can a team like Barnsley ever win promotion to the Premier League? Given the January transfer window, if we have a good team or have had a good run then our players will be pinched, coaxed or otherwise taken from us, sure, we get paid for it, but it often smothers the cohesiveness of the team. Opinions?
Its a scourge of the game. Gone are the days of proper competitive football, 11 men vs 11 men on the football pitch. Too much crap going on off the pitch! Too many nob heads in the game who would rather buy success than earn it.
Totally agree mate. Football teams should agree a squad of eg 25. Then if they have awful run of injuries/suspensions then they have to use their U23s. Would encourage youth development within clubs, although need to find a way to stop clubs hoovering up talent and stockpiling it in U23s until they turn 24 and then toss them on scrap heap.
Agreed, it's just another weapon in the armoury of the "big" clubs (so called) who can use their parachute money to plunder the smaller clubs for talent. The summer is the time for transfer activity, when all clubs have the chance to replace players that leave and bed them in before the season starts. It won't change though. Nothing ever does. The entire system is biased in favour of clubs who get £40 million from the Premier League for being crap. We've done bloody well to get where we are, and it's not over yet, we could still quite easily get in the play-offs. The management and players, including those that have left/are leaving, deserve a pat on the back and a thank you. When a club signs a player, I think they are entitled to think they will get at the very least 1 complete season out of them. Scrap the window.
All because... The Club... has not had its best players under sufficient contract.. Yeah lets change the world...
Time after time I hear people criticising the club for not having players on longer contracts. The policy has been to identify young, talented, hungry players from lower leagues. Hourihane, Winnall, Mawson, McDonald, Roberts, Yiadom, Bradshaw, Scowen. The plan has worked. But in dealing, initially with those players to get them on contract it's highly unlikely we will tie them down for longer than three years. If you're someone with the talent of a Hourihane you're going to look at Barnsley as a stepping stone. You're going to back yourself to go to the top. By the nature of successful, talented sportsmen they're very confident in their own abilities. So why on earth would they want to sign a four or five year deal that would leave them potentially trapped at their new club when they've developed beyond it's ability to provide the footballing level and financial remuneration they think they can achieve?
Well James has signed a 4 n 1/2 year contract at Villa and there`s no guarantee of top flight football there.
I wonder why he would sign a long contract there but not at Barnsley? Mmmmmmmm, let me think...............
There's a skill to not only identifying players, but also getting them to sign contracts of a Barnsley FC favourable length and cost. Roberts and McDonald for example - when you say "why on earth would they sign a four or five year deal" - well I bet they would have been prepared to mount Barry Taylor in order to join us. For a 5 year or more contract. (they may have drawn the line on compulsory biscuit fetching duty). Not so long ago Hourihane's substitution was met with thunderous applause. Winnall has always divided opinion. Bree is crap on here whenever Hemsie says he's Kenny Sansom's drunken offspring. You need to have someone scrutinizing all this, just like they are players we're scouting, and committing them as appropriate. Committing them (further) when it's right to do so. "The Plan" works perfectly when we not only secure the players we can polish, but also when we act to maximise their value. It's as though our policy ends when we've signed them. Identifying these players is only half of a plan. The other half is having them play for us for as long as possible before they leave for a decent wad. It should be us reaping - not other clubs raping.
Money has ruined the premier league and the championship. It's a sad reflection of the game when we can't compete with Wigan because of PL parachute payments. F*** off Sky.
I think hecky will leave ,it must be soul destroying building a team like this then watch it ripped apart.we just got lucky with these bunch of players and it ain't gonna happen again I,m afraid. I would not blame him if he says enough is enough and goes to pastures new. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I'm not saying that you sign everyone up to long term contracts straight away. Or perhaps any of them, initially. That would be potentially suicidal.
That's all well and good when you know that you've got a Roberts or a MacDonald. But can you imagine the outcry on here if every non-league player we'd signed was currently one or two years into a five year contract? As soon as we know they're going to come good then so do the player, his agent and every other club in the country.
We are 16 points above Wigan after 27 games. To simply say we can't compete with Wigan is of course prize tosh. To say we can't compete with them in terms of purchasing/retaining players would be a tad more accurate.
Yeah it was all luck. That's how we replaced nearly half of the team that got promoted and got lucky again: pure luck. All the good signings over the last 3 years, pure luck. We just pick names out of a hat and hope they work out
Exactly. If you sign them on a two or three year deal then try to extend it half way through it's because you know they're going to be a big asset. At which point so do they. At which point they're going to refuse to sign an extension because they can see bigger bucks elsewhere. The reality is we can do little more than we've done. Maybe there is some wriggle room with clauses put in etc but that would probably mean that as soon as a big club came in they'd be off anyway. It makes me laugh that people seem to think that the club is run by idiots who are incapable of securing better deals. Mansford was an ex agent. he knew the working of contracts inside out. I'd back him to strike a better deal than most of those moaning on here.
