In 1981 ( blimey , 25 years ago !! ) , we were all confident that the team would be more than capable of holding it's own at the higher level . However , all the fans were adamant that we needed a new centre forward to replace the carthorse that had scored a miserly 10 goals the previous season . He wasn't fast enough , he didn't score enough goals , basically he wasn't good enough !! To his credit , Trevor Aylott went out and proved EVERYONE wrong , started scoring goals early on , becoming a handful for every opposition defence and by the end of the season , he won the fans' Player of the Year trophy .
Is history repeating itself a quarter of a century later with Marc Richards ?

    Yes...

Barnsley fans, have in the past few years become disaffected for one reason or another, and have often transferred this into their dislike or downright abuse (often unjustified) of certain players. I have always thought that Marc Richards was a decent player who has never once given anything but 100% for this football club. I cannot understand the constant nit-picking and dislike of players who, it seems to me, are playing well or to the best of thier abilities. I have no problem with people expressing their opinions about a player because this is why we all go to watch our beautiful game. I have been encouraged by the reaction towards Marc Richards in recent games and hope he continues to play as he is. We used to hae a reputation for getting behind players and supporting them through thick and thin which will, ultimately, only make them better players because their confidence is sky high. I hope that Richards can become our ew Trevor Aylott because I feel he deserves to be in the same league as him. I rememebr crying when it was announced that Big Trev was leaving (I was only a young un mindst - that's my excuse!!!) but I do wish we would get behind our own players a bit more, t=rather than constantly picking at them as we tend to do. Rant over - Foz

    Agree with that

Aylott and Parker worked far better together than Aylott and Walker , even though Colin's goals per games ratio was VERY impressive .

I reckon what cost us promotion that season was that bad run we had around January/February when we only won one game out of nine!

    I compleatley agree

I like Richards, always have, and I think the problem with barnsley fans is that they dont like Richards because they know he has so much potential, we have seen his great perfomances in the past e.g. Forest away, and he has started the season well. Give him the chances and he will score goals.

Sorry, but Rico not in the same league as Big Trev.

I like Ritchards attitude & he gives his all, I just think he falls short of the standard required. How can you compare him with Big Trev? I know Rico has scored 3 in the last 3 games but how many has he missed? Big Trev never was a goal scoring machine, but he was the work horse & key link man up front who shielded the ball, held play up for a while, something we are desperatley short of at the moment in my opinion. Rarely was he bundled off the ball. I understand people defending Rico because no player should castigated by their own fans, but lets get one thing into perspective, he aint no Trevor Aylott.

Actually , I never DID compare their abilities

Just the level of abuse . Aylott was regarded as the weak link in the 1981 team by the supporters ( just like Richards has been this summer ) . In fact , if anything , Aylott's abuse was greater due to his perceived lack of mobility . Big Trev then showed everyone he was more than up to the task and became the best target man outside the 1st Division ( better than most in the top flight too ) . I queried whether it was possible for history to repeat itself with Richards also showing he can "cut the mustard" and prove his critics amongst the fans wrong .

RE: Actually , I never DID compare their abilities

Fans on this board pay more attention to a players weaknesses rather than their good points.
An example is the criticism Paul Hayes sometimes gets.Obviously he would be a better player if he had more aggression but that is not his game.If he had that he would be a three and half million player in the Premier league.Every player at Oakwell has his weaks points but why not enjoy their strengths and overlook the minuses

    Not the point

I was talking of their relative merits. very similar in my book.

Hayes is almost worshipped by the same people whom made Sheron Pariah.

    Wrong

Sheron was given a good chance by the Oakwell faithfull he was bought as the finished article for a lot of money and in the end was one of the reasons why we've been watching 3rd division football for the last 4 years, then again Hayes has been here 1 year we get promotion and he scores 2 in 4 don't understand the flack he's been getting, maybe he should just run about a lot I know this would please a few people.

    I reiterate

Please point out which bits you feel are wrong.

Now I also add that I like(d) both players but also that both deserve(d) equal criticism for on the field performances. I am merely laughing at the selective vision / memories of the critics / supporters of both.

    Hayes:-

Lightweight, skillfull, creative, scores a few (pens), does a job midfield though not the fastest. Good assist ratio, penchant for going missing for long periods of a game. surrounded by a team that puts in the effort. Cheap.

    Sheron:-

Very skillfull, creative, scored a few, did a job midfield though not the fastest. Good assist ratio, penchant for going missing for long periods of a game. surrounded by a team that put in little effort. Expensive.

It was not Sherons fault he was overpaid, he was not alone. He had some magnificent games, destroying teams alone or providing for Dyer but people seem to forget that.
