Daniel Khalife pleads not guilty to Wandsworth prison escape https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-66876658

He’s facing terrorism charges and escaped from prison by tying himself to the underside of a van. He is now pleading not guilty to this “alleged” escape.

Is it just me or are we heading rapidly towards complete madness?

Are you really saying that people shouldn't be allowed to plead not guilty?

Not wanting to start a conspriacy here. But I've driven lorry's in and out of prisons for years. Not food but recycling skips. All of them at Donny also Thorpe Arch and Ranby at Worksop.
In my experience I find it ludicrous to suggest that a prisoner could escape by tying himself under a lorry with bed sheets. And if that did happen he'd need the officer that stays with the lorry 100% of the time to not only to be in on but help him.
Plus there's only certain times of the day that you are allowed in.. if you miss your slot you'll be sent away. You are only allowed in when prisoners are locked down.. ie before they get up.
Even tho you have an officer with you at all times, inside and outside the lorry is searched at the gate both in and out including the underneath. Plus obviously cameras everywhere.. you'd have to have countless prison officeers helping him or at least looking the other way, so still in onit
It doesn't ring true to me what the official line is..

If we ever see a day where people can be convicted without trial we will have come to a sorry pass indeed - even where the denial is preposterous.

He'll be thinking it's a visit to court and a day out of the cell. Like a little excursion.

If given the option, they'll likely choose video-link to an in-person hearing as they lose their cells when attending in person. There's no guarantee that they'll go back to the same prison if remanded again.

He’s allowed to enter whatever plea he likes. It’s stupid as he’ll get a longer sentence from doing it but I’m not sure what you are suggesting. Are you saying people should be told which way they have to plead? Or are you confused and you think that he’s been found not guilty?

No I’m not confused! It just seems a waste of the court’s time and money when he quite clearly committed the crime of escaping custody. Or maybe prison guards forcibly tied him to the underside of the vehicle and made him leave against his will.

Still that’s the justice system I suppose. Innocent until proved guilty. I just wonder what his defence lawyer will claim happened.

As others have said, pleading not guilty in a case like this will result in the harshest sentence. . Pleading guilty cuts the time by up to a third.
There may he an argument that he wasn't in" lawful custody" from his defence lawyer maybe?

IIRC In Germany, escaping from prison itself isn't illegal. Its acknowledged that its human nature to want freedom so they don't punish anyone extra for doing so. They don't then get out for good behaviour, so in a way they are punished.. ;)

I know jack, but on the face of it, it all seemed a bit Hollywood. But hey, sometimes truth stranger than fiction.

Maybe a new sentencing structure. 2 hours shackled to the under carriage.

Find it strange him pleading not guilty to the charge of escaping when he clearly did escape, on the plus side if found guilty he won't get any leniency as people generally do for a early guilty plea

Could just be a case of he likes being in the spotlight.

Two former soldiers in the Royal Corps of Signals described 21 year old Khalife as someone seeking attention and sometimes “ playing the clown” to do so. They recall an incident in which he stole a senior officer’s epaulettes, put them on his uniform, and wanted to post photos on social media wearing them.

Poor lad he’s a victim of compulsory car sharing. He was innocently mooching round prison when a crack gang of the woke led by Boris Johnson and Gary Lineker kidnapped him and made him car share with Gary from accounting.

Thank god the prime miniature has saved us from this hell
