First time in since the grand re opening. It stinks the beers not brilliant and the atmosphere is like a witches tit.
yes indeed... the shlthole will be once again...................... shut soon!! bring back the alchopops and john smiths smooth..........and the rest of the commercial lagers. fooking real ale................. waste of time...only for boring old f@rts
Hard to pinpoint but there are a few problems. Firstly the premises - there is a faint but present, dank smell. Where from I do not know, nor what could be done to prevent it. Also the decor is a bit bland. It has had a decent paint job but there's no pictures or anything. It just seems a bit sparse and could do with something to give the place a bit of character. Next there's the atmosphere - when there's not many in you could hear a pin drop. When it's busy the hubbub of conversation seems somehow reserved. Compare and contrast the Sheffield tap which always seems quite lively. You can't bottle that magic ingredient that just gives some pubs a welcoming and lively vibe but whatever it is, at the moment the Old No.7 doesn't have it. Finally there's the beer. There's nothing wrong with it - it's not sour, warm or flat or anything and the choice and prices are most reasonable. However, there is work to be done. I have only set foot in a couple of times but I have found the hand-pulled beer to come out like gravity dispense - a loose, frothy head and thin mouthfeel. Not crime of the century but if your USP in a tough market is high quality cask ale, it must be consistently in perfect condition and it isn't. Furthermore a blackboard would help with names of available beers, brief tasting notes (colour at least!) and ABV percentage would be helpful. As it is you have to walk down the bar to read the pump clips and pester the bar staff for info on the beers, which they don't always know. I really want the venture to succeed and I'm sure it's really not far away from being what we all hoped it would be. It does fall short at the moment though and needs to get some momentum going to become and remain popular.
It just depends what you want before a football match.......... I like to sit round a table and have a chat with mi bruver and tuther guys we might know. Which means.......quiet, no music.........good beer. Others might want something different.........it would be good if one of the main boozers such as Walkabout put on some dance music etc etc and got something different going for the afternoon session. I'd probably have a walk in there then. I remember Saturday afternoons in the Crazy Daisy in Sheffield used to be brilliant. But most pubs int TARN before the match are very much the same, except for one thing, the beer is usually garbage. And that includes both of the Spoons pubs. Although in saying that, they may see the 7 as a bit of competition and up their game now
I agree acorn normally is a good pint but I wouldn't recommend any one to go there on last nights showing. It absolutely stunk of stale sweat. As the only pub in barnsley that is dedicated to real ale it was a let down. No music except a radio playing in the back ground somewhere in the kitchen and dis interested bar staff. Got a hell of a lot of work to do for it to become a success.
We need a bit of variety in the boozers Thats a big problem with the boozers in TARN..........they are all trying to compete for the same market We dont want music in all of the pubs.........there is a real need for at least a few proper pubs in Barnsley All the surrounding towns have them. One of my favorites is the Red Lion just off Arundel Street in Sheffield.......there's nowt like this boozer anywhere in the Barnsley district
Re: We need a bit of variety in the boozers Revvie - there is a blackboard just before the steps.....gives the beer, ABV and price....although when I went in on a Sunday it wasn't up to date! They did update it whilst we were there, just that they'd obviously changed a few pumps due to a busy Saturday. I didn't notice the smell, in fact I even made a point of going to the toilets because I recall they used to stick back in the day! I'm sure it's still a work in progress......they have some old pictures of the pub on their facebook page...those would be good pics for on the wall.
Re: We need a bit of variety in the boozers I don't want it to be a pub with loud banging music streaming out making your ears bleed but something playing in the back ground even if its some contemporary jazz. Just something to remove the morgue feeling.
Re: We need a bit of variety in the boozers the place is doomed....shut it down and open a bar with loads of blue neon...like the silvers used to be....now that was a pub. If the real ale old f@rt brigade want some of that muck then i suggest buying a homebrew kit and supping it in the shed. thanks
I've been in a couple of times, its been fine for me, but a pub that is the show case for Acorn beers the beer quality should be perfect, I'd say when I've been in its been good but not exceptional. There a a few pubs that seem to have a consistancy that others pubs can't manage,The Sheaf View at Heeley Sheffield, Thornbridges Greystones in Sheffield, always exceptional beer . Harrys bar in Wakefield has a promotion on this week, they are selling one beer for £1 a pint , a different beer each night,on Saturday it was Leeds Pale.
