The majority seem to think it's inevitable that Lee Johnson will be leaving and most of them aren't rubbishing us which makes a change. http://www.owtb.co.uk/index.php/topic/46767-johnson-to-barnsley/
I wish our board was like that. 5 pages and no personal insults, extreme nonsensical views or stupidity!
Oldham fan here. Reading some threads on this forum I've been a little surprised by the negativity towards Lee Johnson. It was a lot more hostile when he was first appointed at Latics but he had no experience of management or coaching and only a handful of fans had even heard of him as a player. Since then he's shown what he is capable of with us and he is and will be in demand for the job he's done so far. If Lee's to join Barnsley you'd have to give him a transfer window or two to really show what he can do. He's proved to be extremely shrewd in the windows, recruiting very very well on a small budget, and selling at the right times for good prices. He's coined us 'the home of the unloved' because of his ability to get unwanted players for free and make them into quality regulars. Assuming you've got a bit of money to throw about, he's perhaps not shown himself to have the best judgement when actually forking out fees for deals, with a couple of players not really justifying their money just yet. Tactically he's evolved a lot from the start, when he was insistent on total passing football, now the team he's set up are capable of playing quite a few different styles, some prettier than others, but often quite effective. Some have labelled him a bit of a tinkerman but he's a winner, and he'll put his team out to get the 3 points. Looking at your squad it's pretty safe to say you've underperformed this season but I wouldn't expect that to be a challenge too far for him as Lee has shown that he is an excellent man-manager and knows how to get the best out of players, especially the younger ones, where we've seen unbelievable progress made in a very short space of time in players that nobody expected to even make it as a pro. If you're to get him it'd be a long-term appointment obviously given his age, and a lot of Oldham fans would be gutted because there has been more positivity around the club than there has been for a long time under his management and a sense of purpose that he is slowly making us into better team. There have even been tame comparisons to him and Joe Royle by some, who obviously holds god-like status at Latics, but maybe that's stretching it at the moment. He's a likeable bloke, good with the media and has learnt rapidly in the short time he's been here, which gives him real potential as a manager higher up the leagues in the future, and is why I hope writing this ends up being a pointless endeavour!
Thanks LJBWA but there are two issues that you highlight: 1: he probably won't get two transfer windows. 2: our board aren't familiar with the concept of long term.
Thank you for taking the time to post that, mate. Very interesting and informative. Much appreciated.
Don't post rubbish ,Gordon is one of the best posters on here one of the few worth reading so shurrup
Chill pill......its a laugh on here, that's the whole point innit? If I wanted deep intellectual thinking with civilised comments I would look elsewhere. But I don't, I wanna laugh and a bit a banter so I come on here. Hopethishelps
Err Chill Pill to thee n all .that's what I was doin ,having a laugh.seems only you can post what you deem humour and complain when its not taken in that spirit.
I agree. As a young backup, Davies too.williams yet to show his credentials, but looks like he has potential.i still think player wise we aren't too bad, shame we didn't find a settled selection and formation to prove or disprove their credentials. I really hope whoever comes in can get the best from em all.
I forgot Davies was a Danny signing, so aye, him n all. Jury is out on Lalkovic. I think it's unfair to judge him yet, same goes for Phenix who I hope is on the mend. I still think Hemmings would score regularly at this level but we don't put enough crosses in and the rest of his game is probably no better than L2 standard. It's the experienced lads he brought in who let him and us down. Turnbull hasn't been as good as I'd hoped. Wouldn't say he's been poor, but I expected more to be honest. I am used to good keepers though. Brown was a dud, and moved on swiftly, as was Treacy. I think Lita's been even worse than they have, hopefully a new manager gets summat out of him (doubt it), Bailey and Jennings. I'm not sure they're lost causes, although if I read tomorrow that all three have been released I wouldn't be arsed. Then you've the three centre halves who failed in the second tier for us and haven't looked any better a level lower down. I think they're all capable on their day, all have strengths etc. But they're not my type of centre half, none of em. I can't help liking Ramage, but he's no Bobby Hassell is he? Amazes me that he's a Premier League player. So for me, Danny made as many good good as he did bad signings, just about. But he didn't manage (in 6 and half months) to get a consistent run of results/performances out of his best XI. Some of that comes down to bad luck with injuries etc, and the fact he had to build a new squad in quick time. The optimistic side of me reckons we were just a fit Winnall away for improving. The pessimistic side of me thought Danny was struggling like buggery. I hope the next man can achieve things much quicker than Danny was allowed to, otherwise we'll be here again in the next 18 months.
