RE: Did Barry Hines write that? Yea.. and produced by Tony Garnett. Watched it with two ex-miners. So ended up with a running commentary about what it was like in the good old days.
the pit was called Skiers View ...now bulldozed, and the club the working mens club was in Hoyland, behind the Kino Cinema.
Barry Hines used to live at Hoyland common, and used to teach at Kirk Balk School, I think thats why a lot of locations used in both Kes and Price of coal were around there.Skiers was between hoylnad common and Harley, there is a railway bridge with a garage by it now and that was the entrance where the garage is.
RE: Barry Hines used to live at Hoyland common, I know where you mean too - at the bottom of the hill on your way to Chapletown? Excellent - it is my intention to tour some of the sites in the Barry Hines films / plays one day - I'll remember that, cheers...
I thought the colliery was Barley Hall I know Hayden Conway (of Saxon fame) was the young son of one of the colliers.
I know Skiers Spring was in Kes.

Correct also: The interior of the club was Hoyland Common WMC but the exterior shot (the scene during the downpour and the patio brolly ) were filmed at Elsecar Midland WMC , The exterior house shots (cricket in the yard ) were filmed at the bottom of St Helens street in Elsecar first row on right from the bottom up the hill its since been demolished. hope this helps.
also here are some other locations from both , around Hoyland the Chip shop in Kes was called Savages its in the middle of Holand common Billy's house was one on the Parkside estate in hoyland common the place where he flew kes and where his teacher watched him fly it was the Kirk Balk school fields (newer one) on low hill adjacent to the old graveyard of St Peters church near Low Stand Tankersley Old hall is the ruined manor where he got the Bird, its in the bellground woods and close to tankersly golf course south of J36 on M1 it still stands and can be seen from the motorway.
I was in that, I played............ 1 of the school kids who was waving the flags when the prince arrived. at the time i was a pupil of st helens Catholic school on West St at hoyland. It took 2 days just to film them scenes. Cant remember why but it was 2 days of school that i enjoyed.
