Is not a bad thing. We have a squad that naturally accommodates it. Rather than forcing players into roles to play it. When we failed with it under LJ everything was based around going through the middle as we had no wingers. Despite attempts to penetrate 'bomb alley'. Now we have excellent wingers and in Hourihane someone to general the midfield. We also have a natural number 10 in Moncur where as Hourihane was never a number 10. The prospect of the 4-5-1 we could opt for excites me where it usually would deflate me. We can play it with the same intensity and fluidity that we play the 4-4-2. It doesn't mean we have to go cagey. I agree for now with the opinion that we need to give the players who got us here a crack in the formation that got us here. Dont over complicate things before its needed. Even if in the long run we are forced to change. I think early doors the adrenaline and momentum of the players in this 4-4-2 will pick us up more points that expected. If come October we start getting rolled over then change. If we get walloped in the first few then change. But whatever the results are I dont think its naive to play exactly the same way we did against Wigan, Walsall and Millwall. I genuinely think we'll surprise a few. 9 points out of the first 15. Roll on Portmand Road Come on you reds!
We had isgrove while playing 451 under LJ and he was awful and completely inneffective. A completely different player playing 442
Yes but we were playing narrow. We only really used the wingers via Pearson as a dictator hitting the diagonals. We also didnt have a natural number 10. 4-5-1 doesnt have to change anything in the way we play. It will just give us an extra body when defending and require the midfield to bust a gut when our wingers are crossing or our striker is holding the ball.
I think it would work with Moncur playing pushed on at the top of a midfield triangle with Hourihane and Scowen behind and Hammill and Watkins pushed higher up. Almost a 4-2-3-1 maybe. Although I'd just stick to 442. Not broken, don't fix it...
It's good to have a plan B & the Moncur signing means we've got someone naturally suited to the no. 10 role. It's become a bit of a myth that Hecky only plays 442. There were plenty of occasions last season where he changed to 451 & in general it worked well
