To get in touch with the rest of the world, due to the amount of accidents in the darkness.

    What the ****? :S

Apparently we are less alert in the evenings.

Statistically it is safer to drive to work in darkness and drive home in daylight.

    Yes, but

How will changing the clocks change that statistic?!

Changing the clocks won't change when it gets dark!

    That is perfectly true.

As a result of changing the clocks, it will be dark when I am driving home from work next week (assuming I travel at the same time on my watch). However, it will be now lighter when I am travelling in to work at 7.

The safety argument is that it's better for it to be dark at 7 and light at 5. Apparently, there will be less accidents on the roads.

    OK

So, it'll mean it gets darker at 7pm instead of 6pm.

But how will that change the statistics?

I really don't get it to be honest, just sounds silly!

because when the majority of drivers are coming home

they will be more aware of the road becasue they can see it better

    what they mean

is that statistically it is safer to drive to work in the dark and drive hime when it is light rather than to drive to work during light and home in the dark. so if they changed the clocks so that it got dark after people got home (and obviously stayed dark while they were driving to work) then it would be safer.

    Fair enough

I doubt it'd make much of a difference though if I'm honest.

Whenever I'm on the roads when people are coming home from work, light or dark there always seems to be some drivers who will do anything to get home as quickly as possible!

am i the only one who thinks it is safer to drive in the dark?

you can see cars setting off out of junctions quicker, see cars approaching a junction as you set off, see cars coming towards you round a bend etc because you see their headlights in front of the approaching car. During daylight the first thing you see is when the car as come round the bend.

I actually think it's safer to drive/ride in the rain

Because you know you cannot go too fast due to the conditions so you have to take your time...in theory!!

    Same with night driving/riding.

I find it a bit more tiring.

I'm not too keen on the motorway or unlit roads. Incidentally, I leave my side lights on all the time (quite a bit of my route is heavily tree lined).

im the opposite when it comes to lights

i dont use mine until it is actually dark, often when it is starting to get dull i see a lot of cars with lights on but i dont see the point in putting them on myself because i can still see cars over a mile away so visibility cannot be too bad. i dont have any tree lined roads though, theyre all wide open bypasses for me.

RE: im the opposite when it comes to lights

My old bike was an imported one, so it had the headlights on the whole time due to legislations in whatever country it came from. I found it advantageous compared to having my lights off during the day/early evening.

Now, I keep my headlights and tail light on at all time, and find it much safer for others to see me. Well, they should see me with a bright fecking yellow bike but there we go!!

    I'm coming on the bike

    So, dunno about jetlag!

And as for the culture shock? Definitely agree there! Gunna be strange to be able to understand what the locals are saying :pff

I was told a rumour the traffic police are slightly stricter in South Yorkshire compared to Strathclyde though :S
