Is it just me that thinks that is scandalous?

That pay for the ref, 2 linesmen and a 4th official adds up to £1350 which by my reckoning means over 36k to be paid to the referees taking part in todays FA Cup games.

Or to put it another way, its 50 quid short of 125 grand in referees part time wages between the first round and the final.

So should they do it for free ?

And its only a couple of hours work if the ref lives at Oakwell, which is hardly likely.
    Whats the alternative ?

They get paid all their travelling expenses too which is quite lucrative judging by the figures.

The alternative? For £500 a week they should be full time, not part time amateurs getting half a grand a week

Small potatoes compared to players wages.

    Compared to SOME players wages

Not compared to a lot of others. And lets not forget that for players it is their full time job, for referee's it's a part time, saturday job.

But why cant they fund themselves?

Every club has advertising on their shirts yet the referee doesnt. If they did then just think of the money that could be saved and put back into grassroots football.

They have sponsorship on the sleeves.

It's not exactly proper sponsorship though is it. A tiny little badge no bigger than the Football League badges that every team wears.

A proper sponsor on the front and one on the back could bring in a lot of money that can be ploughed back into the game. Referees are often the centre of attention and there are lots of photos in papers etc of a ref holding a card up so the front of their shirt is a prime space for some advertising

    Salary doesn't reflect performance then.

RE: Compared to SOME players wages

If i am not mistaken £525 is for a Championship game so it is small compared to the players wages they are refereeing. They get less in lower leagues, just as the players do. Although it is only a job they do once or twice a week, they have to commit their lives to it. They need to be very fit and they have to attend courses and meetings etc. Lots of travelling, and doing their other jobs. They get paid well because at the professional level it is a big commitment. Some non-league players can earn that sort of money from playing football.

£525 is for every fa cup game from now on. I'd guess that the ref will be on more money than any of the Chasetown players or Dag & Red etc.

Ah, yes, forgot about the FA cup bit. Still, my point about the match fees stands. For some refs todays fee will be a bit of a bonus. For some who ref in the PL and Championship it will be the norm.

I'd rather we reduced the amount of sponsorship rather than increase it
