http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6273617.stm The rest of us might as well pack in now, as from next season the bottom of the Premier will get £30m! So the relegated clubs will be able to fund a return the following season, we'll no doubt see at least 2 relegated clubs gain promotion the following season. so the stakes just got higher for the Blades.....stop up and they can establish themselves as Yorkshire's "super club"
it's ............... an insidious way of moving towards the American Football no relegation -a team can go 0-16 in a season and still be sure of playing in the same league next year-rugby union premiership are trying to do the same-it's the money men talking-in a way i wouldn't mind -let the FA get on with it and make the conference the 4th division
Should be a minimu of 4 up and 4 down from Premiership. The parachute payments only help so much.
You still have to offload a load of players (if possible) unless the contracts allow for a reduction in salary.
Birmingham came down with a decent set of players who just didnt perform last season. They have since bought one of the best players in the divison loaned half Arsenal reserves and offloaded those that didnt fancy it in the CHampionship.
I dont see Watford going straight back up when they come down as they are nowhere near as straing as Birmingham.

RE: it's ............... At least in the States they are quite clear about a closed league - we might as well go down that route rather than have an unofficial closed league. Let's restructure, make sure each area is represented and go that route. Ballocks to tradition, history and all that. 20 clubs, Yorkshire gets 1 (maybe 2)
RE: Should be a minimu of 4 up and 4 down from Premiership. Yes but factor in a guaranteed £30m and you're going to end up with an elite of maybe 25 clubs.
If the number of clubs going up and down increased I think that the wealth would get spread around more.
All it takes is a season where all the sides going up stay up and thats 20% turnover of clubs in Premiership.
Also if there is more chance of relegation then I think a little more reality will ensue in some clubs as there will be more chance of heading to the championship.

it'll never happen FIFA are pressing for a reduction to 18 clubs which will happen eventually-my guess is that's when they'll close the league
RE: 4 up 4 down would be even better in an 18 league system nt not for the 18 self interested clubs-how many turkeys vote for Christmas??
Just logged on to post the same
Football has completely lost its soul. So from 2008/09 whoever gets promoted from League One like we did will have to compete on the same football pitch with:
-Teams that have earned AT LEAST £30m the previous season for being sh*t
-Teams that will still have the parachute payments from the Prem.
My god, it really will be a waste of time very soon. The football league will wither and die- becoming a collectivelower leagueto the premiership. Clubs won't be able to compete, so they won't eventry. The present gulf between the top league and the rest will become immense. They might as well close the premiership off and stop promotion and relegation.

Do you think the teams in the Prem will save the money for a rainy day? They are nearly all massivley in debt.
The 30million will be soaked up in extra wages that they wont be able to pay when they go down.
I dont think it will make a lot of difference for teams down the bottom end.

RE: Absolutely correct Harrow Tyke... ...the position we are in at the moment could be the best position we are in for years. We will NEVER get anywhere near the prem. again, that should be the dream of every club but that has been taken away. The more I think about it the more I might just take up a non-league side, professional football is right pissing me off.
RE: 4 up 4 down would be even better in an 18 league system nt That's the system in Italy, works fine there.
They seem to get a decent turnover of clubs as well Plenty seem to get their chance in Serie A.
Although I think the money is slightly different in Italy.
I am not sure but I think teams do their own TV deals.
