The best quote by Nobel prizewinner Stephen Weinberg:

He describes religion as an insult to human dignity. "Without it, he says, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, it takes religion."

    Absolutely **** ON!

    Quality show

Particularly for Channel 4 who seem obsessed with wnak reality TV. I'm not a believer and although I agreed with a lot of what he had to say I didn't back him 100%. The quote you've given is a brilliant one, but it's flawed. Some very good people have gone to war and done some atrocious things that have nothing to do with religion. Good starting point for a debate though.

Funniest bit came during the end credits and the trailer for the next programme. After an hour of questioning our own morality and mortality Channel 4 showed its true colours: "Next tonight, Celebrity Big brother."

The spin doctor is one of the funniest characters I've seen. Often wonder whether it's ad libbed or not?

I think i read somewhere that quite alot of it was ad libbed. Love the deadpan delivery of the Chris Langham aswell.

Not to spoil it for you, but the last one in the series with the rogue e-mail is one of the funniest programmes i've ever seen.

And all my fav Americana shows have started again in the last couple of weeks. ER, House and desperate Housewives. Only need a new series of the Sopranos and it's TV heaven.

same bloke said " thirty years ago many of us were racist now none of us are" (quite) and " thirty years ago gay people couldn't walk down the street holding hands now everybody can do it without fear" mmmmm..

Plus there was his instinctual bias against religion as a Gay man

What planet is he living on ?

    RE: you're easily impressed aren't you ?

Use to have an argument with a guy a used to work with about religion and war- but the counter to that is to look at the social reforms which were brought about by the quakers and other Christian groups in the 19th Century- including the abolition of slavery and the factory acts.

Religion can actually be a force for good. the problems lie in that people twist their own scriptures to fit their own message and this can even apply to athestic beliefs. Look at the way in which Stalin and Hitler both interpretted the works of Marx and Nitsche to fit their own evil creeds.

    RE: Yes

Think theres a while to wait fo The Sopranos.

I'm catching up on series 3 as I missed that. Didn't start watching til someone at work lent me series 1 on DVD and then I jumped straight to series 4! Managed to rcord 2 and 3 from More4.

Have you tried Cold Case? Bones wasn't too bad either.
The West Wing is rather hit and miss this series though

    Correct and well said.

The programme certainly created an excellent debate at work and the morons whom still think the planet is only 6,000 years old are now buggered. The Rabbi bit was best.

You make an interesting point - but perhaps don't use the best examples because the abolition of slavery and the factory acts where at least in part driven my a desire to improve efficiency = income rather than social justice / religion.

Afterall slaves tend not to be the most motivated of workers....
