If you're looking for a film to rent this weekend, you'll not go far wrong with The Selfish Giant. It's about two lads from the Buttershaw estate in Bradford who go out scrapping (metal and that, not feighting). One of, if not the best film I've ever seen. On the recommendation - I just watched it. Its a sort of KES spin off - instead of the kestrel we have copper cable I don't need to watch films like this because I live amongst this type - every other person where I live has got a ford pickup with old washers and prams in the back of it.
Different film altogether but I watched "The Boy In the Striped Pyjamas" last weekend on the telly - very poignant film, don't know if anyone else caught it.
Buttershaw. What a ******* shithole. We drove through it once. Never again. Holmewood is the same. Growing up in Elsecar, Welland Crescent used to be the 'rough area'. I also remember Kendray and Grimey in the 90's as two particular shitholes. They seem like Monte Carlo now I've seen Buttershaw/Holmewood. Proper ghettos. Populated by thieves, druggies, gypsies, immigrants. No go areas. Police nowhere to be seen. I'll probably watch that film with r lass this weekend. Cheers fo't heads up.
Aye, you mentioned that before. It's the kids I feel sorry for. But with a good mentor/teacher, they may escape the ghetto.
Is Buttershaw where they filmed Rita, Sue and Bob too? I noticed Rita is in it from the trailer, is Sue? And Bob, too?
Yup, well, some of it, Buttershaw was the estate where Rita and Sue lived. There were bits filmed all over Bradford. Unfortunately Bob and Sue don't make an appearance in this film.
South Armagh isn't very nice either, not when you're wearing combats and carrying an SA80. Total **** hole.
What struck me about Belfast was the giant wall that went from the mountains all the way to the town centre - and yet the trouble was caused in just a small area the size of two villages the size of Middlecliffe. So there were two small areas that looked like the houses in Middlecliffe at each side of the wall. The whole carryings on there are just unbelievably DAFT...........and unbelievably boring (do you ever hear a politician from Northern Ireland talking about owt else but the 'troubles'?)
True and while I found politicians from both sides of the religious divide tedious I still have a ferocious dislike for Adams and McGuinness and what they stand for.
thereev went to the famed institution of education that was 'Kendray Oaks Comp'. They knocked it down a year after i left........pity they didn't do it 6 years earlier....Harrow would have snapped me up for free!! And as stated Kendray is a lot nicer now than it was then. Smashing!!
