Anyone else watch this tonight?? Brilliant two hours of TV. Had me in tears. Those poor, poor young men. I doubt I'd have had anything like the level of courage they showed. Loads had even lied about their age to enlist!!</p>

Have always thought that. The more you see of the WW1m the more it cements that belief.

The real insanity of it is the Generals never seemed to learn. WW1 saw a leap forward from the wars of the 19th Century with cavalry and infantry standing in lines, to aircraft, tanks, and machine guns. And many of the Generals never seemed to grasp the differences these made.

58,000 casualties on the first day of the Somme.

We should never forget these lads.

As my granddad (a veteran of the Somme) said when my eldest brother was born - "more cannon fodder"

Just wish I'd met my granddad, my mum used to say I was a lot like him.

Yes, a very well made program.

Glad to see the British Army's leadership qualities have improved over the years.

The 'Donkeys' were using tactics from the Napoleonic war - if you had enough men to charge you could beat an enemy that could only fire 4 shots per minute over 200 yards. Unfortunately they were facing 100+ machine guns that could fire 6 bullets per second over 3000 yards .......= massacre
