But the reality is Peterborough murdered us in the first half. 2-0 flattered us. It could have 4 or 5. While we passed it along the back four, they went straight for the jugular and caused us all sorts of problems.

We missed Foster. Badly. Wiseman at centre half is a nice idea when we're playing a footballing side, but against a big powerful centre forward it can turn into a nightmare. Tonight was his nightmare. Cranie at the side of him wasn't much better. Our centre halves were dominated. I don't know what else we could have done, what with all the injuries, but if we play that central defensive pairing again against a powerful forward line the result will be very similar or much worse.

For much of the game 'borough got 11 men behind the ball, in the first half they broke at pace, in the second they were content to sit back. We had no idea how to break them down. A thunderbolt from Davies in the first half that hit the bar and a cross from Dawson in the second that really should have been nodded home by Harewood were the only times the pulse rate increased. For the rest of the game we just passed it about in front of them.

The diamond formation has worked well recently, but against an opposition content to sit back on a 2-0 goal lead it did us no favours. We desperately needed width, but never had it all night.

Oh well, back down to earth.
