Reds watch Irish star BARNSLEY have checked out Northern Irish striker Peter Thompson. Manager Andy Ritchie led a scouting mission to the province. He watched Linfield v Glentoran on Tuesday to catch the 22-year-old in action. Barnsley inquired about the centre forward last year but Linfield's £100,000 asking price was judged too expensive. Tuesday night's game in CIS League Cup ended goalless. Glentoran went through after a penalty shoot-out. "To be honest nobody played well," Ritchie reflected, "it was a poor game, the standard was poor." Ritchie added that he would check Linfield's valuation of the player. "I don't think it will go any further," he confirmed Thompson has a formidable scoring record. This season he has netted 11 in 17 matches. Oldham have also been watching the striker but Ipswich town manager Jim Magilton denied he was interested. "Most people in football know the kid because of his goals and there have been plenty of managers and scouts watching him," Magilton said. "I'm told that Andy Ritchie and John Sheridan from Oldham were having a look at him but Ipswich have known all about him for a couple of years. "Joe (Royle] had him watched and we've got reports on the lad. But I never had any intention of going to Belfast to watch the game. "I know Linfield are asking a lot of money for the player and we have never even got close to entering negotiations." Barnsley's Colin Healy was expected to join Bradford City today. He is moving to the League One club for a month on loan. "He's just going there to get some games in," Ritchie said. Healy has yet to start a league match since signing on at Oakwell in August. Barnsley are appealing for help in identifying crowd members who invaded the pitch during last Saturday's game against Leeds. Anyone with information is being asked to telephone the club (01226 211211). Calls will be kept in confidence.
