It's sad when anyone's family member dies. You might think it is stupid but they may well think you are stupid for not thinking it isn't.

(P.S. before I get stick I'm trying to speak in language he might understand!)

Not just "letting a loved one die", it was her choice as well as a Jehovah's Witness….although the basis of that particular belief is rather flawed in how they interpret the passages.

RE: Isnt that every religion you are describing?

Probably….but particularly that bit. Had quite an argument, about 15 years ago, with some that called just 2 days after my nephew had died of leukaemia and he'd had 2 full transfusions,

    Do you record your arguments?

You remember one from 15 years ago?!

They pre-called so he killed them. Easy enough to remember really.

without wishing to side with EastStander too much, as I'm sure he'll spot a typo or something. It's not too hard to remember someone talking to you about how great god is and everything is for a reason, directly after losing someone close. You tend to be quite argumentative about it.

I was there 12 years ago, the Jehovah's Witness people have never been back to the house.

    Stop nit picking

We all know why he remembers it, but that doesn't stop us taking the opportunity to make him look slack.

    okay sorry.

For the record, my argument was more out of sarcasm. They showed me a picture of the 'afterlife' on a leaflet. I asked if God drew it? They told me it was an artists impression to which I replied "I'm not entirely sure that lions would get on that well with people and the artist might want to reconsider".

It was a poor picture, they had it coming. Pet Lions my arse.

The called round atmy houseand I bored them to death with a load of old claptrap about the kids of today. They parted with "Well must be moving on to spread the word, We'll come back another day".

Never seen them since. About 15 yeras ago it was.

Whilst you and I think that its stupid - they dont

I would be the last to defend the JW's as personally I think a lot of their beliefs are wrong.

The issue of blood transfusions is only one of a long list . However if someone strongly holds a belief that it is wrong in any circumstances we should respect that belief.

There is no guarantee that a blood transfusion would have saved her - though the odds are that it would. Had she done that though she would have been thrown out by the remaining witnesses and her husband would have been in a different difficult situation - another issue I have with the whole organisation but I cant force my views on an organisation I fundamentally disagree with .

It would be a different matter if they tried to prevent non believers from receiving blood but I am not aware of them ever trying to inflict their views on society at large other than by trying to convert people.

You can pick any religion and find bits which are stupid when considered rationally

I have much more of an issue with any religion which forcibly tries to make others follow -eg certain branches of Islam today (and embassasingly for me certain branches of Christianity in the past)

at least this JW has only inflicted suffering on a supportive family

their choice so leave them be.

when they come to my door I just tell them I respect their choice in life to support their beliefs..BUT..its not my belief, I ask them to respect that and tell them I do not want to become a Jehovahs witness. They normally accept this and go away. If they carry on then I just totally blow them away with various theological arguments and Darwinian like too...they suddenly realise they are no way gonna match me and bugger off.

We don't believe that pigs actually fly because our lives wouldn't be a jot more meaningful if they did. But the important thing here is that we don't need to believe it. It wouls serve no purpose; quite the opposite, people would think we were crazy.
Religion is a different matter. We need to feel as though our existence actually means something and our presence in the great scheme of things is not some kind of freak accident. So we invent God. Reason has no place in this kind of belief because the desperate need for answers overrides common sense. The case of the Jehova's Witnesses is an example of the endless tragedies that result from people's baseless religious beliefs.
Oh, and no silly remarks about the pigs example.
