I was born on Chaple Street ,Obelisk view and for the first 8 years of my life you could say pilley hil was my play ground the winters in those days were fantastic what a wonderfull sledge track the better ones could go down the hill un up nearly to the **** INN another favourite place of mine i remember on fridays my dad used to come home from work and i would be waiting at the bottom,to see what goodies he bought for me, i was never disappointed now my childhood dream ,was to be a bus driver and drive a bus down Pilley hill.in 1936 my Mother died, then we moved to Rockley avenue,..My dad married again.and my step mother was a ******* to me(thats another story). i left school one friday in 1942,on the following Monday i was down Pilley pit, working with my dad,but not for long i was soon to be a pony driver working at the coal face...the years went by..and in 1949, i said right thats it im off in the ARMY to learn to drive,in 1954, i got a pre releice course at the YTC.there i made it a BUS DRIVER, on my first day and remeber i was only5 2 in heoght asked to sit in the driving seat of the bus, and i could not reach the pedals so they got a box and shoved the seat forward and i was ok,i passed got my licence, and my first trip was on the JUMP CIRCULAR then the years rolled on and one day i was sent to PILLEY PIT,and to return Empty...now here was my chance, i drove that bus down Pilley Hill, where no bus had ever been before, What a Thrill on Pilley Hill........
Rockley Avenue ??? When I was a teenager , I knew a beautiful , wonderful girl from there . Unfortunately , it was a case of unrequited love .
She was/is really nice I just couldn't understand why she wanted to date all those obnoxious gits she went out with . Birdwell always seemed to have the best looking girls at High School . Still , The Boss says I got lucky in the end when she married me !!
We had a Pilley Hill at Doderth, didnt sledge dahn it tho , Old timer might have been comin tother way in his double decker from snow Hill.
