I've read a few references to it opening on the 1st of July. Where has this information come from? The transfer window has been open for weeks hasn't it? It opens after the season has finished. Barnsley, like many clubs, have already signed numerous players, so why do people think July 1st holds any significance? Maybe because most football contracts run until the 30th of June, but that has nothing to do with the transfer window.

    I was under the impression

That the two transfer windows are from 1st July - 31st August & 1st -31st January for permanent transfers . I'm probably wrong .
It certainly wouldn't be the first time and definitely won't be the last .

Transfers can be agreed anytime but the player cannot move until the next window.

So if we were still playing since we signed those players they'd only be able to play from tomorrow.
