For anyone interested, both of these, dealing with the after effects of a nuclear war, are being shown on BBC4 tonight from 10pm.

The War Game, made in 1965, was originally banned by the BBC for 20 years, allegedly under government pressure, until being first being shown in 1985.

I remember watching Threads when it was first broadcast and absolutely sh*tting myself.

I love Threads and the total destruction of Sheffield. It's no wonder their North Stand is a bit rickety when a nuke has been dropped on Stocksbridge.

I remember all the playground talk about Threads from when it was first shown in the 80's. A few had been allowed to watch it and took great delight describing it to the majority who hadn't.

It looks really dated nowadays, but is still essential viewing. I'm always amused by the fact that the post-nuclear sequences were filmed on a row of demolished houses near Hillsborough.

I went to an event recently that talked about the making of the film, and much of it was guerilla-style filming, as they didn't have the necessary permissions to do a lot of it. There's a sequence where there's a traffic jam in the panic to escape the city that was reportedly filmed with a spotter using binoculars telling the driver to stop in the middle of a crossroads to create a traffic jam and 'real-life' horns blaring from other drivers. He then looked out for any police cars approaching before communicating to the driver that they had enough footage.

I watched Threads when it was first broadcast and it was truly horrific. I watched it again recently and it still shocked me. An excellent film which foretold a future that we must prevent from ever happening. It's about time somebody did a similar film about what's going to happen to the climate. The latest prediction being that food will be 25% more expensive by 2050 as a result of climate change. That's 25% on top of what it would otherwise have been due to the normal increases due to inflation etc.

I was 13 when Threads was first aired.

    Gave me nightmares for years.

Any how on a lighter note a young Zak Dingle and Bernie from Coronation Street are in it.
