http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/professional/protection/process/online-application-form/ Fulham's stand is listed and was built in the early 1900s. The West Stand's centre section was built at around the same time, if not before. Should we apply for it to be listed? Regardless of people think of it, it's a historical structure and makes Oakwell - a link to our Dad's and families from years gone by. We all know it needs a lick of paint and some TLC but, in my opinion, that's all it needs. This isn't a debate on whether it should be knocked down by the way - just after some thoughts on whether an application as a community asset is worth looking at.
Personally, I'd say list, but with modernising around the centre bit. I think this would look quite good personally.
Am wi thi ont nostalgia bit but it aint ours to mek decision and could stand in the way of any future development if Council/Cryne wanted to move us elsewhere in the borough.
The Stand at Fulham was listed when the club was bankrupt to prevent the club being sold and developed as it stands on some seriously valuable real estate. I think it was Jimmy Hill who was behind it and it is linked to the actual cottage. The stand is also the oldest in the football league and the application had some seriously political muscle behind it. I worked for EH in conservation for 5 years. Listing is based on buildings having particular architectural and historic significance, which the old West Stand has none. I weep at what failed to make the grade and was lost, even the pre-application would never be taken seriously. Not a prayer. It's not at all in BFC's interest to list it anyway.
I think that's the point too mate - would we want to move elsewhere? By listing it and applying for the ground to be deemed a community asset it protects it from future demolition.
Nah.... If ever (God Forbid) we ever reach the summit again, and crowds flocked etc, we would have to jump through so many holes to replace it with a new stand. Leave it as it is, until such a time our fan base needs it replacing. Which, of course, could be another 100 years
I can't believe what I'm reading. Why would we want to move anywhere else? We have probably the best set up in terms of land location and acreage in the whole football league!! The whole point of it coming under council ownership, was to defend it against unscrupulous owners who might view the land as an asset. We've had this debate numerous times on here.
it has no architectural significance, and looks bloody awful. i'm no expert on the matter, but i suspect many of the listed facades were/are archibald leitch structures. p.s. moving grounds would be awful!
You all do realise that listing the West Stand (which could never happen) would prevent any future development or any major changes or refurbishment? What numpties are ticking this 'yes' box?? I love the West stand and have used it for 35 years, but fcking hell?
At this present time no and hopefully not in my lifetime but councils are under attack finance wise and Patrick aint gonna live for ever.
