Whenever someone criticizes a player someone else will generally stick up for the player by saying "he works hard" as if this is a justification - it's OK that player X is crap as long as he works hard. Firstly, we shouldn't see working hard (or appearing to) as a bonus - it is the very least we should expect along with a bit of footballing ability - the players are paid handsomely to put a bit of effort for an hour and a half or less - it's not really too much to ask Secondly, I often find that the **** players who are defended in this manner DON'T work hard and if they did put a bit more effort in they might not be as bad. It's an automatic assumption that because a player is crap he MUST be working harder to compensate for this - it's not true. This was posted with someone in mind but can apply to plenty of other players in the past
I can think of some lazy players who were no good See if anyone can think of a better example than Kevin Donovan I agree that in general bad players fit into 2 camps though - talented but cant be bothered (Sheron Lumsden) - I dont think we have any of those at present And not really good enough but try hard - Odejayi classic example - I cant get angry with these players they try their best but really are one or 2 leagues above their level. Doesnt mean they should be playing but thats the managers fault not theirs Thinking Rigters is tending towards the lazy and no good category
You see Not only do I think Odejayi is no good, I think he doesn't try hard enough either and that's what really gets my goat. I just don't understand the idea that Odejayi is a work horse. I think most of the time he looks lazy and disinterested.
We can agree on one thing Odejayi isnt good enough guess we will have to disagree on the trying bit - not really worth arguing about to be honest as he shouldnt be playing
