A Wigan player has just gone down in the box, and yes it would have been a soft penalty, but as the commentator said, anywhere else on the pitch and it's a foul, but it's not a penalty especially so early in the game. Why should the area of the pitch or the time of the game dictate whether a foul should be a penalty or not. It's like saying you can't make a substitution if it's raining, b0ll0cks.
But it isn't a rule that penalties are not given early in a game. It's all down to the referees interpretation of the rules.
Refs tend to let people off early on in a game as it sets the standard for the rest of the game. If he gives a penalty for a soft challenge, worse challenges have to be punished with execution. Or something.
i feel sorry for referees especially in the premier league. every match there are so called experts analysing every decision they make. i can see them going on strike soon and i wouldnt blame them, they are human and make mistakes just like referees have done in the past and will continue to do so in the future, its not their fault that football is no longer a sport and is now a business run by greed.
It's all been created By the constant change in how certain tackles are percieved. I watched match of the day on saturday (or the FL show can't remember which), and I saw a freekick given for a shoulder barge, not even a strong one, more of a coming together of two players. It's because nowadays, referee's are afraid to make a mistake, hence the reason we see red cards for challenges like that of Kompany's last week, 5 years ago it would have been a booking, 10 years ago, a good tackle, and 15 years a goal, an ordinary tackle. It's about time they reassesed rules, some tackles are being punished unfairly and others are going unpunished because of the time and area they are committed in, inconsistent is the word.
Also they have to decide if a player has dived or not and get criticized when they get it wrong easy target for Managers to vent their frustration.
problem is no common sense from FIFA no interest from FA no consistency from refs. no respect from players no room for error from fans. think thats covered it verdict its football.
Re: It's all been created Agree entirely. It won't be long until tackling is banned entirely. It's a dying art. Players don't know what they're allowed to do, refs don't know what to punish, and FIFA et al don't know what day it is.
Agree Gaz, they might as well ban slide tackling now cos players can't slide with their studs facing down.
