Radio Sheffield was out in Barnsley today because a lot of recruitment is done in the town. Local people don't like the tories as it is and these cuts will not be popular with not only the people of Barnsley but the people of south yorkshire as a whole. Is there a PR opportunity here?

Get another flag pole erected on the West Stand gantry and stick an armed forces flag up there. Get the players involved in a fundraising drive for injured personnel. Make a big announcement that the club proudly supports the armed forces. And finally offer free tickets to any serving member of the armed forces attending in their army uniform.

Won't cost much to do it but will raise the profile of the club, will make the club seem more approachable and people friendly, will get us some media attention, local and possibly national if done correctly and will get us some new fans.

It's sad to see them go, I've worked with and trained with a lot of soldiers from the regiment when they were still known as The Green Howards. They actually recruit from North Yorkshire, Cleveland and Teeside but this shouldn't stop us feeling let down over the loss of them. The only silver lining is that my old regiment The Duke of Wellingtons Regiment, now known as the third Yorkshire battalion were spared. I imagine a lot of soldiers are feeling very let down today.

With no armed forces, how are we going to illegally invade oil rich countries? The Americans will have all the plunder to themselves! It's false economy.

Don't worry, they're going to significantly increase the TA

That should cover it (tongue in cheek) Also, costs of the TA's being on duty & away from work have to be met. Probably likely to be away more often and for longer as well.

I can't be the only one who wouldn't like to see the club supporting the armed forces.

You know that their recruitment drives target the poorest areas with the highest unemployment?

Interesting point made on Question Time last night - the UK has the 4th biggest military budget in the world (after USA, Russia and China), for a country the size we are that is just unsustainable.

Think it stinks though that no Scottish regiments being disbanded - oh that's not a political move at all with an independence vote on the horizon.

Under 25's in Barnsley suffer 30% unemployment. The solution is not to sign up young people with no job and train them to fightand die in far flung countries, whilst mourning their deaths when they come back in body bags.

As Ark said, this is not America, although sometimes it feels like we are Airstrip 1.
