He was young, and keen, and above all a great athlete. He was a smashing and likeable lad who got on with those around him well. His physical fitness and levels of stamina impressed all. He would turn up for training early, he would leave training late, he rarely drank alcohol and was extremely motivated. He was honoured to be given the opportunity to play for a team such as Barnsley FC.

He came from quite a distance from Barnsley, so living in the town was a culture shock, as was the ‘party culture’ of the players who seemed to be more interested in their lifestyles than the team. They often picked on him and gave him stick about not being one of ‘them’. This lad had few people around him outside of the team, so he started to go with the flow, he did what they did, he turned up for training when they did, he left when they did. He started having more nights out.

By no coincidence his on field performances dipped, he went from being a hero to a zero, until he eventually left, and when he did he rediscovered a good deal of his motivation and form, and that lads name was…………………

    We have a winner

T'was a story told to me a while ago by someone in a goodposition at the club. No I'm not being one of those that pretends to have insider info, it was in a conversation about something else entirely that the story came out.

Anyway, the number of names mentioned in response to this thread does make me wonder how many times this has happened at BFC. How often do our ex-players go on to bigger and better things? Surely management need to recognise that this IS a problem, and tackle it head on, otherwise we as a club will probably continue to have a damaging influence on the prospects of promising new talents which will snowball into players not wanting to come to the club that could potentially kill their career.
