Wont get red tape so there is no point signing them. We need a British player. Pointless really Davey!
JESUS WHATS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!!! Davey has bid for British players. Look what happened. We couldnt attract a mid-table lg2 player. Time and time again we will get blown out of the water in terms of wage demands. Players in this country are not stupid, if they know a team like barnsley are interested they will use this to angle for a more fashionable championship team. Foreign players is one of the few routes Davey has of bringing new faces in. Having said that I'd like him to bring in a premiership loanee. Danny Welbeck, Ched Evans etc...
Agreed, we cannot compete for good british players. The red tape for Colace was his club, not the british end of things. We may or may not have similar problems, but we have to try, and it sounds like Simon is trying. Imagine what Colace would have cost if he was already in the country, but we got him free. This then allows us to offer decent wages and extend contracts. All of the above is valid and people should not ignore these points. We cannot compete, so have to explore different avenues, some will work, some wont. Ask Brian Clough, god rest his soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rant over, Sorry!
and just think if the FA get their way and bring in a rule saying all clubs HAVE to have a certain number of english players in their starting line up then the wage demands of all english players will increase dramatically and we won't be able to sign even current conference level players.
Hold on a minute though.... Darren Moore Rob Kozluk Steve Foster JCR John Macken Anderson de Silva Lewin Nyatanga (on loan for ages!) Iain Hume All english based players and from either newly relegated championship, existing championship or even premiership at the time, so we have been able to attract these sort of players. How many of these players would people class as not being up to it in this league? Surely we need to add more similar players of similar quality and experience, PLUS that one to really push the boat out for?
agree 100% The foreign market is hit and miss, but its a route worth taking. Foreign players wont know who we are and will see it as a route into English Football and maybe the Prem. If we could get a premiership loanee like we did when we first got Anderson, that would help. Look at the impact Frazier Campbell had on Hull.
Arsenal dont seem to do bad with a load of foreigners do they. its the only way we can compete with the big guns of the leagues hoping we find a hidden gem from abroad, was nt ronnie glavin from abroad, owen blackadder from the same country too. Even the top premiership teams look abroad because what clubs want for English players.
Glavin & Archdeacon were seen as past it by Celtic! Neither did bad for us and one is a complete legend!
Hope so Its a very badly thought out move from the FA designed solely to ensure that the gulf between premier league and the football league is widened and protect the interests of its select few clubs
Foster and JCR were in a rut, form had dropped and so the clubs were happy to part with them for minimal cash. Neither had proved they were Championship caliber players when we signed them. Anderson wasnt rated by Moyes, the Davey/Moyes connection helped this go through Kozluk was paid a shed load in wages Hume had had a poor season with Leicester and needed a change in scenery. £1.2m was probaly £400k more than he was worth, so we simpley out bid what little competition there was..
RE: Dual Nationality A large proportion of Argentinians are eligible for EU passports due to European grandparentage. Take Inter Milan a while ago they had 6 or 7 Argentinians in their team when you were only allowed 4 non-EU passportholders. Can't see us having taken on players who don't have EU passports, therefore I suspect the only 'red tape' will be in getting clearance from their clubs and FIFA/UEFA as in the case of Colace. Good luck to the club on this one, if they come through the trials, a good player is a good player, wherever he comes from.
