What do people think of the sort of merchandise available off here? http://www.buyking.co.uk/?gad=CJi9mqYCEgjJMAQELefj2hi2tMD-AyCo0P8X Some of the t-shirts and other clothing looks ok and we could have a small club badge put on ra ther than a large in your face one on things like shirts. Or we could design some t.shirts etc and see if we could submit the designs to BFC to get made.
Good idea Laura I think the main thing is getting the design right - there is an abundance of things in the club shop that I would never dream of wearing or using and the main thing that stands out is the awful design work that has gone into it. Just banging a logo on something doesn't make it desirable to a Barnsley fan necessarily. I work as a marketing manager and there are absolutely loads of different companies that manufacture worldwide and you can get some great prices on things if you plan ahead and manufacture in the far east mainly - but it's the design that really matters. A fully planned design can really sell a product. But unfortunately in the past Barnsley FC haven't wanted to invest in that area at all - no matter how much return that could bring in. You've only to look at places like Newcastle United to see that the investment has paid off - but they don't carry hundreds of un-bought items like we do - they have a smaller range but do it well. But I think your ideas are great - it can really make a difference to a club - the only problem is that usually Marketing Managers for sports clubs tend to be only interested in the players side of things than the merchandising. Phew - long reply to your suggestion - but keep them coming - I'm sure the club will pick up on some of your good suggestions some day! Claire
Thanks RedC/Claire What about retro shirts? http://www.uksoccershop.com/products/5015.html&zenid=e8df805cd8d496f4d51ad79cb28e74ac
RE: Thanks RedC/Claire Laura I think these are great and they used to stock them - so I can only imagine that they didn't sell very well. Although I think they're great - unless they priced them too high - which again is something they do quite often. They find something that would sell then get greedy and then will say 'but they didn't sell' - I got the retro shirt for about £10 and I'm sure they were still selling them at a high enough profit for themselves to make. Our club shop will be looking for too high a profit on things probably. I've just bought one actually for my younger brother who has just started coming to some games with me and I had to go on ebay to buy one. (Although he did say last night he wondered if they took returns!) But yes, personally I really like these. Claire
Re: Thinking of things to sell in the Club shop. nt I bought a retro shirt when they were on sale in the club shop - but that was a high point for the club merchandising, around the time of the premier league. The quality wasn't ideal either - the shirt got really baggy after it washed and the colours ran badly too (bleeding into the cuffs etc).
West Ham do a range of retro shirts thatare very cool - a trevor brooking shirt which is the onehe wore (early eighties), a tony cottey (late eighties)shirt that he wore etcfor us think the Tommy Taylor (50s) Ronnie Glavin (81/82), think the David Currie (87/88), think the Neil Redfearn (96/97)...
That's the difference between doing it, and doing it properly.
BFC aren't good at that, and traditionally haven't been.

Laura, I think your efforts are really cool - you should keep looking and put your best suggestions to the club.
Re: Thinking of things to sell in the Club shop. nt As I said to Laura - it's all about investment - that's the same with all promotional merchandise. For BFC and for all brands. People won't buy it if it's cheap tat - and you do actually do damage to the brand. And like it or not selling rubbish and not giving people things they value says a lot to them about Barnsley Football Club. My brother's an example of this. A relatively new convert - although still fighting it! He had a wander round the shop and said - it's all rubbish, I'd never wear any of this stuff - and it's why I (and I am a marketeers dream) have only ever bought replica shirts, one scarf, a car kit and one sticker in the 27 years of going to Oakwell. But they don't think of how to generate additional income 'cos it needs investment, or build the brand - and whatever people think - it does make a difference I'm afraid.
I wanted to buy a nice baseball cap at xmas but they only had two designs and one of those had a grinning dog on it,CRAP! Ilike the idea of a retro shirt, plain red, taits on the front and GLAVIN 4 on the back,or red with chevrons on the sleeves and CURRIE 10 on the back
Too right - spot on. You should write to the club, you are totally 100% correct. They need someone like you involved inside the organisation.
