Is it just some annual cricket game against Australia, or what's it all about? :D
Where does the name the Ashes come from anyway?

Is there a proper World Cup in cricket, and who are the current world champions?
What about "club cricket", what's the best team in England?

That's a lot of questions, I know, and I don't even know why I care (I don't even know the rules of cricket!), but it'd be nice to have some idea about what you're talking about!

Oh yeah, and congratulations for winning this Ashes thingy. (clap)

For information about The Ashes http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ashes?wasRedirected=true
The Cricket World Cup is held every four years, the last one was 2007 & the current champions are Australia.
The club competition is contested by counties & the best team at the moment is Durham, they lead the County Championship with 4 matches remaining, they also won the 2008 Championship. Sussex won in 2006 & 2007.
Barnsley play in the Yorkshire League & with 4 games left of the season they are 7th in a league of 14

beating the aussies at anything is good, but cricket is the most common sport between us both, well the only!!
its like us V germany at football.
not everyones cup o tea but all the nation celebrates an ashes win, let face it, its only the 2nd since the 85/86 tour where they've humiliated us nearly every series since.
the "ashes" comes from the 1800's when they beat us and they decided it was the death of english cricket.
county cricket is low key but try and watch the 1dayers V auz coming up next weekend if you can get it over there, i even got a turk into it last year on holiday!

It's a game played by men in trousers which lasts five days, often without either side winning, and you can get a draw even if you're a thousand runs in deficit. In other words, it's the barmiest sport on earth.

Until you beat the Aussies! :D

It constantly amazes me

That a country like England can invent a game that needs 5 consecutive days of, at least, decent weather for there to be any chance of producing a winner!

Very good!

But they did used to continue until they got a winner.

I like that comment though.

Thanks for the replies everyone

There must be something great about cricket as it's so popular over there, and I intend to find out one day what it is! :D

I didn't realise that the Ashes "tournament" has such long traditions, and that Australia have been dominating it for a long time until now.
I once met a guy who claimed to play in the Finnish "national cricket team" - that's the only time I've heard anyone talking about cricket in Finland!

+++ The rules of cricket +++

The Rules of Cricket

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

Thats a completley confuzing explaination of cricket dont you think!? Personally I love both cricket and football on equal measures, I havent missed a game for my club side this season. Its the only game were you can get a great sun tan, keep yaself fit and have quality banter during the game, and a quality drink after the game.
