In fact, a lot of them are no longer in league football while one of them who played that day was the tragic Phil O'Donnell, who died after collapsing from heart failure while captaining Motherwell in December.

It was back on December 3, 2001, that Barnsley last beat the Owls.

How many recall the unusual timing? Kick-off at Oakwell on that December Sunday was 6.15pm. It was being shown live by the doomed ITV Digital Sports Channel, hence the start time.

Wednesday players such as goalkeeper Kevin Pressman, defender Danny Maddix and striker Efan Ekoku, have hung up the boots and are no longer on the playing scene.

The metaphorical pipe and slippers apply in the Barnsley ranks to the likes of Steve Chettle, Darren Barnard, Mike Sheron and goalkeeper Kevin Miller.

Then there were the foreign players in Wednesday's team that day.

Gerald Sibon returned to Holland and plays for Heerenveen while Trond Soltvedt returned to Norway and retired. A Wednesday sub that day was 20-year-old Argentinian striker Pablo Bonvin.

What do you think? Post your comments below.

He's back in Argentina having played for several clubs since, including Boca Juniors and Argentinos Juniors, both former clubs of Diego Maradona.

Two of the combatants, Chris Morgan and Derek Geary, are teammates now at Sheffield United. Another one, Leigh Bromby, has just left Bramall Lane and joined Watford.

Morgan's Reds' colleagues that day included Chris Barker (now QPR), Gary Jones (now Rochdale), Chris Lumsdon (now Carlisle) and Dave Mulligan (now at Port Vale). Bruce Dyer has just been released by Doncaster Rovers and is seeking a club.

From the Owls' line-up, Steve Haslam is at Bury and Paul McLaren at Tranmere. Simon Donnelly is back in Scotland playing for Kilmarnock while the unpredictable Owen Morrison (one of the band who have played for both Sheffield clubs) has been north of the border at Dunfermline but has justed signed for Derry City in Northern Ireland.

For the record, Barnsley won 3-0 with an early goal from Morgan and a double from Sheron.

They had gone into the same without a win in six and Wednesday were the bouyant ones - unbeaten in four and, four days earlier, having won 1-0 at Premiership Villa in the fourth round of the Worthington Cup.

Oh, yes, the managers. Both were new to the jobs.

Terry Yorath had taken over permanently at Hillsborough after a month as caretaker while Steve Parkin had been in charge at Oakwell for less than a month.

For the record the teams were:

BARNSLEY: Miller; Mulligan, Morgan, Chettle, Barker; Donovan, Lumsdon, Jones, Barnard; Sheron, Dyer (L Jones 88). Subs: Marriott, Bertos, Nei

l, O'Callaghan.

WEDNESDAY: Pressman; Geary, Maddix, Bromby. O'Donnell; Donnelly (Bonvin h-t), Haslam, Soltvedt, Morris (McLaren 68); Sibon, Ekoku. Subs: Stringer, Harkness, Westwood.

It goes to show how bad both sides were...

When most of the younger players that are still playing all went onto play lower league football.

I remember it but not for the score

There was this drunken moron sat next to me with some small kids who kept shouting "come on Barnsleeeeeey" in this high pitched whine every time we had the ball. I had to tell him to shut the **** up before we even kicked off. When we scored the first he tried to shake my hand hand I stiil don't know how I didn't end up knocking him out.
Totally ruined my enjoyment of beating the pigs and I haven't seen him at Oakwell since
