I've just seen a report on SkySportsNews re Portsmouth
they have not conceded a goal and guess why??
Tony Adams-that's why-he has been brought in by the obnoxious Redknapp to coach the defence
It still galls me that last season Nigel Winterburn was on TV and was virtually begging for a role coaching defenders-he said he felt most managers wouldn't take him on cos they'd feel threatened but he said he didn't want to manage-just pass on his knowledge-what an aquisition he'd be-I can dream I suppose!

They've also.. signed David James, Sol Campbell, and played against none of the big Premiership sides.
RE: They've also.. In principle though surely it wouldn't do our defenders any harm to have someone who was at the top of the tree giving them some advice/help
No it wouldn't.. but I don't think Tony Adams has anything to do with Pompey's clean sheets. I suspect its more to do with Sol Campbell being far too good to be playing for them, and David James being in good form.
I don't mean it in a harsh way.. They only employed Adams just before the season started - he can't have that much of an impact so quickly. Sol Campbell is a superb centre half who went through a bad time - hes more than capable of fixing a defence when a generally good goalkeeper is behind him, and Stefanovic is also a solid defender.
I think Campbell's presence was more of an impact than Adams. Just my opinion.

RE: I wish Adams was.......................................... coaching our defence. He is one guy who really can organize a defence. He was well coached by that Master of defensive play George Graham. The first thing George ever did when he joined a club was to sort out the defence. That is the base which all the great managers deal with as a priority. Score a goal in a 1-0 match and you get 3 points. Shankly,Busby,Paisley and Clough always gave defensive organisation a priority. They built a base from which their free flowing footballl could spring. As for the critics of Adams at Wycombe, though as far as I can remember I only saw them play once, my first impression of them was that they looked a well organised team. A poor team, lacking in quality players yes, but none the less a well coached team. Football has always been an insular game which has been well behind other sports in inovation. American Football teams (gridiron) have employed specialist coaches for many years. It makes sense to employ specialist coaches, why else do we have goal keeping coaches, to coach a specific element of our game. Why should defence, midfield or attack not have specialists? Every position has different demands on the player. It makes sence to have specialist coaches who have been at the top as players. If I needed heart surgery I'd want to be operated on by a heart surgeon not a GP. Our lads do not defend as a unit that is why we have the worst goals against tally in the Championship.
"Score a goal in a 1-0 match and you get 3 points". Unless it's an own goal. You really are the most annoying Joey on the planet.
