(and Wrexham) Imagine Welsh players being counted as "foreign" for them! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/football_focus/7028310.stm On Radio 5 this morning they were saying that "foreign" would mean a player not eligible for the national country for that league. Would bugger the Welsh and both Irish national sides as well.
Has happened in the past where we could play our league campaign with Uk players but were restricted in Europe - we were still allowed to compete by winning the Welsh Cup in those days - to only 3 "foreigners". I went to a game at Standard Liege and we were down the bare bones with youth team players playing and making up the bench. I'd be surprised if Blatter could get the EU to change their employment laws tbh, despite how important he thinks he is. On the plus side for us it would also mean that the clubs employing Welsh players would have to regard them as one of the best 5 "foreigners" at that club. If not, they may have to find themselves Welsh clubs.
You are missing something He is saying that foreign means not qualifying for the national team that the league is in, therefore Welsh players would actually be "foreign" players for Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham! Although as you say, I can't see it coming off as the first time a club decided to challenge it in the European court then it would be thrown out.
RE: Didn't read it like that ...but yes, I think you're right. We enjoy the "foreigners" bit btw, we get it every week Having said that, it's likely to have little or no effect on our team. A few years ago we had a full XI that were Welsh for a few games and played most of the season with 6 or 7 Welsh regulars. Now, it's only Joe Ledley who falls into that category. Paul Parry could be another and youngsters Chris Gunter, Aaron Ramsey and Darcy Blake to a lesser extent so I don't think it'd affect us that much. It would be more of a problem to the Premiership sides, many of whom are virtually all "foreigners" and Scottish clubs, particularly the Old Firm.
RE: Didn't read it like that It'd be a problem for us at the moment. It would be an anomaly though for Welsh teams!
We Would Be Buggered Only five foreigners in a starting 11? Christ, I don't like that rule. I think all 16 should be foreign or homegrown depending on the manager. I'd rather have people in on merit than nationality. Do you think Arsenal care there's not many English there? It would suck to see a talented foreigner on the bench, whilst a not as good homegrown plays in his position because of a stupid rule.
couldnt they get round the eu law by ...... every starting eleven must contain at least 6 home grown players instead of saying there is a limit on foreign players. i know its the same but it sounds better
RE: couldnt they get round the eu law by ...... But that wouldn't stop teams like Arsenal bringing in youngsters from abroad and bringing them through their academies.
