This endless defensive problem

I think someone derided me the other week when I said that we still had a urine poor defence, even though we'd just kept three clean sheets. So does anyone think that Carbon still has the backbone for it when faced with a physical team? Anyone think Kay or Austin have any sort of discipline when the opposition play on that? Anyone think Reid is anything more than what Vaughan is,ie a second division player? And the most important question that Ritchie ought to be explaining to us is why he brought in the likes of Devaney and Richards when we were clearly in need of at least trying to bring in some better defenders than we have?

Perhaps he was looking for defenders but none available that he was interested in whilst these players were available

    Defensive problems.............and other things

    I see it like this
We needed more attacking options so Ritchie went out and got what he could there
When Howard is fit we have cover all over the pitch
    Except - central defence
Now when Reid and Carbon play together - we ant got a problem
But (and its a big but) Carbon is injured more than he plays and Reid has is fair share of time on the touchline
The problem is there isn't any cover for these two players
Austin, Kay, Hassel are not central defenders
When Carbon and Reid play we can match any team in this division
When either one is out we are poor

Solution - off load Carbon - bring two EXPERIENCED central defenders in
Cost - c£80k per year per player minus Carbons wage
Result - at least a play off place

Underlying problem - Is Ritchie a good enough salesman to bring other players in i.e. a Ridsdale type

I cant believe that there are no available defenders out there given the current glut of players all over the place, that arent any better than our current lot. If AR says that there's nobody around whos available or those that are aren't within our price range then we'll end the season at best where we are now and at worst a few places lower.

Much as I hate to say it

..you are 100% right in the short ot medium term.

I think we could easily fund gerry's wages as I think he would take a cut to be here.

Proper no-nonsense defender (just likes his booze a bit)

I cannot see for the life of me how he would not be a vauable acquisition.

And we dont have and have not had a better c/h at the club since Arjan

Everyone seemed to be aware of that

    Apart from our manager.

Credit to Carbon, when he's played this season he's looked a good player at this level. And I'm sure the constant injuries are very frustrating for him. You can't even blame him for the situation. He doesn't mean to pick up injuries. But Ritchie should have been aware that Carbon cannot play week in week out and brought in adequate cover during the summer.

How old is he now though?

Still, the shop could sell some replica wrist bandages, that'd bring a few bob in

    RE: Almost 35

Short term rolling contract then maybe...

But, I allus have reservations about players returning to one of their former clubs, never seems to work out very well.
