... Tax it !!! http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20080221/tuk-uk-britain-budget-alcohol-fa6b408_2.html
'The British Medical Association urged the government on Thursday to make alcohol more expensive, saying a 10 percent tax rise could cut alcohol-related deaths by nearly 30 percent' By Sumeet Desai
How can they possibly calculate that ?
Do they really believe that this will discourage the target groups ?
The alcoholic will put booze before food and clothes etc for both them and their family so they'll beg and steal to get their fix.
binge drinkers seem to be people who have anet disposable income big enough to allow them not to carethrough either being young enough to still live at home or earn enough and possibly not have many commitments so an extra 10% won't matter on a night around the town.
This seems to hit the people on a budgeteg family where the parents scrimp to get a baby sitter for the Saturday night out at a local with some friends and then find that their night out has gone up by say £5 which to them may seem a fortune.
To me the tax rise isn't that crucial to make me change my habits as whilst I drink regularly it's not often it goes beyond a couple of cans or pints.
I know this is probably boring but I just feel that this government is disingenuous in the extreme as they portray a facade of caring about society and it's illswhen deep down all they care about is raising more taxes.
Sorry for the rant..... God I need a drink now !!!
Dave

feckin drives me nuts this! we don't need more laws or more tax, just enforce the laws we have. Most underage kids supping bottles on a street corner have nicked the stuff. So get the police to take shoplifting more seriously instead of sending someone down the next day. And if someone is underage and drunk then arrest them. feckers.
Yeah, 'cos taxing the bejeezus out of alcohol really solved Scandinavia's binge drinking culture Let's see if it works any better for us.
It'll be a recession next... Thats the way this countrys heading i'm afraid under this lot! All the people who overstretched to buy a house get ready!!
Next, tax sweets ? ...dental caries costing the NHS too much ? shortage of dentists etc yadayadayada...
That's the thing though - they won't just target the cheap booze but they'll do it across the board. And why is it, during the budget they don't increase tax on spirits because they want to help the Scottish whisky industry yet they increase tax on all beer, whilst leaving wine alone?!
