To me he seems massively overrated by many on here, and by the media. But at the same time I also think he's bloody brilliant, got so much potential and has made a big difference to our season. What I'm saying is I rate him extremely highly but somehow my brain keeps saying 'hes overrated' and it's bugged me for so long that I can't work out how or why I can think that. Am I the only one? Help And just to be clear it's not a dig at him, it's a dig at me for still thinking that all the time when I think he's brilliant
He is 20. My only comparison i can make is the impact David Hirst had when he first broke on to the scene with us. If Barnsley fans and the media and fans of other clubs rate Dike then he quite clearly isn't overrated.
Raw talent. That's Dike. Could be a great Championship striker at the worst. With another year's improvement he could be a Premier League player.
Not as good as Hirst but great potential. Stronger and more physical but not as quick. Has a great future in the game not overrated.
Ask yourself 1 question. Who would you have brought In to better him. He as turned into something we av needed since Moore left. What a signing.
I think Dike has benefitted massively from the way we play under Val. Would he have been as effective in a team that demands close control, brilliant passing and a striker that's always showing for the ball? We don't know. He might be even better but we haven't seen that side to him yet. I think that's why there's an overrated/massively valued conundrum with him.
Many on the BBS comment immediately after games have finished. Their comments are often an emotional reaction to the performance of the team or the performance of an individual. These comments are fine, just so long as you remember that they are delivered whilst emotions are still not in control of thought processes. However, as logical and well thought through opinions, they are unreliable. Those logical opinions can only be relied upon once emotion is taken out of the equation. Your opening comments show the difference between the two processes.
I thought that he looked very raw and inexperienced in his first couple of games, which is hardly surprising, because he IS. However, the coaching team have added hugely to his value already and he is a quick learner for sure. Yes, he does fit the system, but that's why he was brought in, so he has developed very quickly both within a system which suits him and with a coaching team who are developing his considerable attributes to play the role required. I do think that he has the look of a premiership player already. If you just take his two goals at Wycombe, they show the quality he has developed - the first a header out-muscling defenders and keeper and the second and instinctive run into a poaching position and brilliant side-foot. Add that the bombshell against Birmingham and the near-post header against QPR, as well as others and I can see why he will probably become a premiership player - hopefully with us, but I think that he could well establish himself at that level.
I think both Dike and Morris have been 2 of the most important signings since Scowen and Hammill. Both natural goalscorers. Morris reminds me of Jonny Macken. Not the quickest, but gets in the right position and knows where the net is. They've both been brilliant.
imo pointless comparing with bygone eras. its a totally different game to what it once was. at the end of the day he's class and will go to the very top, were lucky to have him
I'd disagree with that, I think he's laid a few beautifully weighted balls off in tight situations. Opinions eh
I think he's done absolutely everything that's been asked of him and can't see why he'd be questioned about what he might or might not be able to do. Would you say Woodrow and Chaplin are better at close control and brilliant passing? I personally wouldn't want to go into the playoffs with any other striker from the championship.
Wasn't criticising him. Just offering a perspective. Where's the questioning? To answer your question though I think Woodrow brings the ball down under control better, and has probably shown more in terms of passing/running with the ball 30/40 yards from goal. But back to the point I made, Dike doesn't get the opportunity to do that so we don't know what he's capable of.
I love what Woodrow's done for us but can't help thinking he's forgotten what being a striker is, as for Dike and Morris I think they've raised the bar to a level way above our other strikers in my opinion.
Wouldn't disagree. Probably why I'm able to say Woodrow looks better at bringing the ball down and carrying it 30/40 yards out with defenders in front of him.
I think something that often gets missed when people make comments like I see on twitter with things like “He’s good but he’s not a $20 million player” is that while he might not currently be a $20 million player in terms of taking him at face value as a player right now not considering future development, he has the potential to be a $100 million player in the next 5-10 years. That’s what makes him worth the high fee. He has absolutely all the attributes to make it as a top, top player. He might be a little bit raw in some aspects, but not anything that can’t be coached into him/out of him fairly easily. He has all the physical attributes and he also has the temperament and attitude from what I’ve seen to be a top, top player.
