Tragic - but would anybody here have volunteered themselves as a human guinea pig for medical research, for £2k?

Me - I'll stay poor and stick to Solpadeine.

apparently the clinical trial website that recruits

had their biggest amount of hits for people signing up to do the trials yesterday. the mind boggles!

i suppose people must think they are going to get paid more now there has been a **** up or they just didn't know they can do the trials. its a really horrid thing to do though. locked in a prison getting blood taken out of you all day. a few of my mates did them - one for 3 weeks!! he only got let out once - to play croquet!!

    I wouldn't myself

They volunteered, got paid, and it went wrong

Can't see why there should be such an outcry from the press

    McDog has...

... he did a Viagra and Prozac mix.
    If he couldn't get a f*ck he didn't give a f*ck.

Said it made him feel all queer like.

they must have voluntarily assumed a lot of the risk though.

    Someone has to.

After all the animal rights lot, don't want drugs tested on animals.

I'm not sure many people would sign the papers if multiple organ failure or other potentially fatal side effects had been on the disclaimer to be fair.

My guess is that it said, "you might get a slight headache"

Although £2k for a gambling man, I wonder what odds they offered.

    Those drugs they've had

Had already been tested on animals.

First rats and mice and then dogs and monkies
The testing just done had been phase one of the human cycle, which is to test on fit and healthy young males. Phase two is to test on those who actually have the illness its designed to treat, I'm no scientist or Dr, but personally I reckon thats the wrong way round

    i think there

is something in the contract which states that they will be offered a without prejudice payment if something goes wrong, but it states that it won't effect their rights. however, i think it will effect their rights because they are voluntarily accepting a payment for the risk. the terms and conditions will also be quite wide reaching i would have thought to cover most instances. however, they can't completely exlcude personal injury liability from a contract. i would have thought there is going to be a high degree of cont. negligence on the "victims" behalfs becuase they are voluntarily accepting the risk.

I guess you're right, but regardless of what they have signed, I'm sure their lawyers will be arguing that the scale of the risk wasn't made clear enough.

Would anyone in their right mind do his kind of thing if they were completely informed of what 'could' happen to them?

As far as I'm aware, the media frenzy about this particular case is because something like this has never happened before at this stage of clinical trials. I could be talking out of my arse completely though. I normally do.

There's quite an interesting piece on the Beeb site about 'career' guinea pigs:

Sounds like a good night out.

scale of the risk wasn't made clear enough...

I was on the understanding that they weren't expecting this kind of reaction...

so I doubt very much the clauses would ahve stated to that effect anyway.

2K for their trouble, its their own fault. Money grabbing barstools. Now they have their perfect excuse to pack in work and join the other thousands claiming benefits for not being fit for work!

My initial reaction was why all the fuss? It's a trial, the risks are there. After thinking about it tho' it depends what risks the people were forewarned off.

As someone with some knowledge of clinical trials

I cannit understand why potential anti cancer drugs were tested on healthy volunteers. Nor how 6 were treated at the same time
