Started his career at lower league Peterbrough Utd. Many peoples choice for POTY I would imagine. And, IMO, one of the best keepers in the division. Or is he ****?
    .
    DEF: Bobby Hassell
    .
Signed from the lower league club Mansfield Town. Was deemed garbage by our educated fans initially, and has gone on to play regularly under 5 seperate managers over an 8 year period. To some, Sir Bobby, will go down as a club legend. Why? Erm, played on through injury the day we got back up in Cardiff. Played a key role (in midfield at times) during our FA Cup run of 2008. And shown loyalty when other clubs came sniffing. An absolute gem of a lower leaguer. Or is he ****?
    .
    DEF: Jay McEveley
    .
Played in the same Everton youth setup as Wayne Rooney. A regular in the Premier League with Blackburn and Derby. A Scottish international. Been a massive disappointment here at Oakwell. Or is he great, because he came from the upper leagues?
    .
DEFS: Rob Edwards, Jimmy McNulty and Stephen Foster
    .
The former started out at Villa, and has played his football in tiers 1 & 2. The latter started out at lower league Crewe. Who is better? Give me Fozzie any time thanks. And the latter? McNulty? Wrexham, Bangor, Caernafon, Macclesfield and Stockport were his first 5 clubs. Must be far worse than our other defenders then... he's the best we have other than Hassell IMO.
    .
MIDS: Nathan Doyle & David Perkins
    .
One started out at Derby, the other Chesterfield, then Morecambe etc... who is the better midfielder?
    .
And to finish my point off, Andy Gray, or Craig Davies? One has spent his entire career at this level or better, the other has had limited experience of the division, and would be termed 'lower league'. I know who Id prefer up top.
    .
Yes, there are positives and negatives when recruiting from the lower echelons of the league pyramid. But how many of our flops this year have been 'lower league' eh?
Chris Dagnall admittedly, thus far. Scott Wiseman and Matty Done? Not for me. They have both excelled at times, Done especially. Too early to judge Stephen Dawson and Scott Golbourne, but I see promise in the pair of em.
The dud of the season has to be 'Marquee' Miles Addison. Not a lower leaguer at the time - he is now though, bless him, scored a goal for Wendy t'other day..
Cameron Park? Nile Ranger? Quality recruits they were..
And the worst player IMO this year - JayMac..
And of the 'big names' we let go of - Shackell, Lovre, Haynes - are they pulling up trees?
    .
My top 5 players this season:
    Steele
    Butterfield
    Davies
    Perkins
    O'Brien
    .
Not a big name Prem player among em. I could have picked Vaz Te but he had 2 good months, and he was a football ghost - KK quote - from the SPL scrapheap..
    .
    All hail the lower leagues!
*awaits usual suspects to disprove theory*
    .
PS - Michael Tonge has been a waste of space - another Prem loanee. And Korey Smith has been average too

Aint this like the Hill out poll with about 3 posters stating the shitness and others offering concerns about the number of players coming from lower leagues, though YT.

All players have to start somewhere and they cant all be on the books of the top clubs.

    Good effort, but slightly pointless

You could probably do the same for some of the teams in League 1/2, but the opposite way round and list where they started their careers.

You'd then have an argument of 'higher league players are ace' theory.

It's all about when you sign them, rather than where you sign them from.

    Fine post

Apart from the fact that the best 2 players this season by a country mile have been Butterfield and Vaz Te who both started their careers with Premiership clubs, followed by Steele who we signed from a Premiership club.

    No we didn't

We signed Steele from WBA, just a couple of weeks after our 2-1 victory over them in the league.

    Re: Fine post

It doesn't bloody matter where they're signed from. Its how they perform for Barnsley FC that really matters. Give them a chance.

The fact remains that we have seen our team ripped apart over the last couple of months, any team would struggle when it loses its best players in a short space of time, Butterfield, Drinkwater, Vaz Te, O'Brien, Perkins, Hassell etc. Hill and Flicker are trying their best with the money they have and are building a new side for next season. Give them a chance.

    Re: Fine post

Do we count Butterfield after being released by Man U at 15?

In that case, this Collins bloke was at Wolves and released at 18 so he's from a high league.

And Vaz Te started in the Portuguese 2nd division I think.

No surprise that you like Perkins - tells me everything you look for in a footballer and obviously talent doesn't come into it.

    Re: Fine post

Jake wasnt a Premier League player. He was released, we then gave him a chance. But yeah, best player by a distance this term - but he was an academy product.
Vaz Te was gash until late October, and hit a goalscoring purple patch. I think Perkins, Davies and O'Brien have had better seasons, but thats just my opinion.
And no, Steele wasnt a Prem signing, and was pretty inexperienced in our division.
I hear what Loko says and agree wholeheartedly

You were using the past tense

And using the same past tense, I said they weren't at the time we signed him.
If we sign players of a Division 2 standard, then I agree we'll struggle. However, the standard of a player's ability does not automatically equate to his club's current standing within the footballing pyramid.

    I never said it did

Nothing of the sort. I said the best Barnsley players this season haven't been signed from lower league clubs.

Along with the three I've already mention, the next best two in my opinion have been Jim O'Brien and Danny Drinkwater who didn't come from lower league clubs either.

There's no arguments to win, mate

You can get good players from above, below and the same level. Always have been able to.
