If you were not in the strike then I am sorry but you cannot really understand the bad feeling there is regarding the Nottingham miners or people Its not only TARN fans that chant scab at these supporters e.g. both the Sheffield clubs do it and it wouldn't supprise me if other clubs do it Will the strike ever be forgotton - HELL NO !!! Even when the last person involved in the strike has been laid to rest these fans will always be called Scabs - history will not be forgeten Not just 1984 but throughout history the people of Nottingham have always been known to undermine the efforts of their colleagues (look at the history books) I was on strike for 12 months and would have stayed out for another 12 months It was a terrible time and it resulted in Barnsley losing the only real industry it had Barnsley was a ONE industry town All of Barnsley relied on the mining industry Barnsley still has not recovered from the pit closure proggramme In saying this - the pit closures was one of the best things that ever happened to me and I will be glad to hear when all the deep mine pits have been closed Because while there are pit open men will go down them trying to earn a bit extra for themselves and their families. In this day and age deep mines ought to be banned

In the 1926 General Strike there was a break away Scab Union formed in the Mining Industry largely based in the Midlands and led by the Nottinghamshire Miners' Leader. " It was a well known historical fact that the Nottingham coalfield, after the defeat of the 1926 miners’ strike, had been the centre of a breakaway, known as the Spencer union, after its founder. This pro-management scab union had lasted though the 20s, and had been eventually undermined by the work of more militant miners who in the later 1930s had entered it in order to win over its base to genuine trade unionism - there had been a certain level of compromise in its reincorporation back into the miners’ union and elements of that compromise showed up in some of the federal aspects of the NUM itself. The tradition of Spencerism had of course provided the historical background of the Notts scabbing during the strike." Nudger's right - there was a history of this in the Notts Coalfield.
It's a good post nudger Not sure how that works for young uns shouting scab though. Some of them may well be the sons of miners and may well understand what they're shouting and why, but I'd wager a good deal of them don't have a clue what they're saying. They're just mimicking others. Having said that, I think a lot of people who are complaining about it are missing the point. The scab thing is just another way of antagonising the opposing fans and antagonising opposing fans is something that’s gone on at football games for years. It’s part of the match going experience and helps to make watching football what it is. It’s not something I’d shout (I’d feel a bit of a charlatan as I was lucky enough to live in a household unaffected by the strike even though it obviously affected the community I lived in) and I’d prefer fans to sing songs that back the team, but if it helps to build an atmosphere, what the hell. And before anyone starts it’s not like shouting racist comments, which can never be condoned. The people who returned to work in the strike made a choice and they’re just being reminded how that choice undermined a great deal of other people.
