How does it work, do they have cameras on them, do they only work when the speed limit signs are on, I don't understand what they have done ??
Whatever they've done a big hats off to them, after 8 years of queuing and not going past 3rd gear for 5 junctions it's now a breeze to get home.
Whereas on the m62 they've made a total ****** of it. Never above 60mph, just earning money by putting cameras everywhere. Agree the m1 is much better now.
doesn't that really grind !! you go down there sometimes and its quieter than a Sunday morning but they still have ther bloody reduced limits on!
It keeps traffic moving but I'm not a fan of no hard shoulder, its fine as long as nothing goes wrong. My tyre warning light came on , on one stretch the other week, nowhere to get out of the way, if there had been a hard shoulder I would have pulled up straight away, as it was I JUST managed to get off with enough pressure
As far as I know they work all the time from the 70 mph limit down as they fluctuate, not sure what they are set at though as ni if there is any leeway in them
M62 and A1 are absolutely abysmal at peak times! Means I have to set off to work at 5:30am to be sure I'll get there before 9am since after 6 the whole things at a standstill
The smart motorway is designed to give middle lane drivers an extra lane to hog. It's been a huge success on that count.
if theres a speed sign illuminated then thats the limit, even if its the national speed limit sign being 70. you can usually see if the gantry has a box camera on it however by looking over to the other sides gantrys ( obviously recommended when you are doing 90 and the signs are saying 60!! )
I've breezed up the M1 averaging about 85 the last few times so assumed the cameras only worked when there were temporary speed limits. Yesterday though I saw someone on the other side get flashed (no idea what speed they were doing) so I don't know what to think anymore.
I don't think anyone will ever be honest about it. Since they are now in place I won't break 70 or the speed on the sign. Before that yes. I did. Not a chance now as I suspect the reason nobody will come clean is that they can fleece the motorist out of even more.
I'm just waiting for the highways agency tender to provide an income system for motorway PCNs to drop.
The only ones I know of are the grey ones on the side of a couple of the overhead gantries. Think theyre set around about 78mph but will get you if the limit is changed to 50 or 60 or whatever. Btw the m62 system is much better.
Ussually average speed camaras . Variable speed limit on gantry according to traffic conditions. camaras measures time difference between 2 camaras .how long it should take you to get to next speed camara.
I've seen the North bound camera flash when I've been going South bound on way home from Ossett. One thing that does annoy me is those people who think they can sit in the second lane driving slowly and not moving across to the new first lane, seem they don't understand the concept!
If the left lane is separated from the rest by a solid white line it is open when instructed by the signs. When the m62 first started people thought the left lane was open all the time and filled it up.
You think it's better the m62 always has a limit on? Usually 60mph often 50mph with no fcuker on the road. Think that just about sums you up.
He's probably talking about from a safety and traffic flow point of view rather than a convenience point of view. Don't forget he builds the bloody things. Correct me if I'm wrong Donny tyke but doesn't a slower speed actually mean that traffic moves better? (For reasons I'll never understand)
