I don't think I have seen as many ***** players in a red shirt as I did that season - Marriott, Flynn, Gibbs, Regan, Morgan (yes he was ***** that season), Donovan, Sand, Neill, Rankin - all utter toss. The only players from that squad who would get into the current team are Dyer and Sheron. That team went down on 48 points. Has the standard of the second tier improved that much that the current squad have performed pretty much as bad as that side? Or are the current players really no better than that set of losers??
I think its the standard thats improve, this squad is a whole lot better that the '02 squad. Without seeing the league table from that season i would bet that probably what 4 maybe 5 ex prem teams where in the division at that time
League standard is much higher <blockquote> It's more like Prem 2 now - more money and more ex Prem teams trying to get back to the 'promised land!'</p></blockquote>
Rankin utter toss??? I remember being sat in the ponte end may have been season before, struggling for survival and he came on and put his foot through the ball a la les ferdinand, turned the game, got three points stayed up. Cracking strike full of power past the keeper. If we had someone that dare actually have a shot we wouldn't be in the position we have been in the last few seasons! Bless him, no where near a top class striker but I will never forget that goal.
It was in league one We could have gone down to league two and he scored in the very last minute against Brentford I think to keep us up
RE: It was in league one Yeah that rings a bell, maybe class in league one eh! Good goal though me and my season ticket buddy mention it all the time.
Then the year after he scored against us while out on lan to Grimsby and made gestures to our fans which prompted his sale.
League standard is alot higher dues to the parachute payments, however that squad that went down was utter tripe,
RE: sheron!!!! are you kidding??? if we'd paid £300k for him - then fair enough. But his transfer fee and his wages were well out of order. He was very poor value. To think of the money we lashed out on him - but somehow we thought that £1 million quid was good money for Redfearn. I ask you - Sheron or Redfearn? I know which I'd want.
RE: sheron!!!! are you kidding??? how long did he play for us??? I don't think I saw him put his foot into a tackle, chase a ball into the corners, close down a defender or put his head where it hurts once in the eternity he played for us
RE: sheron!!!! are you kidding??? I remember him having a purple patch, around the time he curled one in at Bramall Lane. Class goal. I was never in the Sheron "Hate club", and at the time couldn't understand it. His wages were obviously the issue, but I though he put in alot more effort than he was given credit for. Don't get me wrong, he was never a favourite, but I can think of alot more annoying, worthless players..... I'm ready ..... (hidebehindsofa)
boo!!!! think it was the lack of effort that annoyed me more than anything. yes i remember that purple patch, which made him all the more annoying cos he didn't produce it all the time
I also thought than when him and higgy played together up top some of the passing and movement was different class. top quality stuff,
RE: boo!!!! But as I say ... lack of effort .... John Oster Deon Burton Clayton Blackmore I think Sheron put in effort - I just think he was scapegoat No 1 (because of his salary)
ok I'll give you another richard frigging naylor, an abysmal loan striker, no wonder he was converted to be a centre half
