I can understand people saying that Suarez needs help rather than punishment. I can also just about accept some people's (predominantly Scouse) opinion that the whole thing has been blown out of proportion and a trailing elbow or a studs up tackle is far worse. What I can't tolerate is the Uruguayan FA, President and Suarez himself trying to pretend nothing has happened. Fair enough, remain tight lipped and let the due process conclude but to shrug your shoulders and say 'what bite?' is just an insult.

I hope they throw the book at him...but they wont as FIFA are toothless. Zidane received a three game ban for the head butt didn't he...despite having already retired. I can see the punishment being similarly tame.

There were plenty of Liverpool fans on the 5 live phone in yesterday effectively saying it's blown out of proportion...life goes on and offering the fact that he's a family man and does loads for charity in mitigation. And I've heard others(understandably) saying there's no way Liverpool will write him off because he's a 50 odd million pound asset. That includes Jamie Carragher. The only high profile Liverpool person I've seen who's said they want him out is Phil Thompson.

I've got 3 Liverpool fans on my Facebook....I could have predicted the reactions from each of them, 1 is just posting stuff up comparing to Cantona, Duncan Ferguson and basically that it's being blown out of proportion. Another who is always having a go at other teams/players who is basically keeping a very low profile because he can dish it out but can't take it, and the 3rd, similar age to me who is saying that Suarez is an idiot and deserves whatever punishment, that he's a great player but not player is bigger than the name of the club.

Same after the first couple of games - first 2 were just slagging off Man Utd players in the squad, 3rd guy was level headed about it and actually posted something about how so many people stick in club lines when it comes to assessing the England teams performance - it's never the players from their club.
It was funny just watching Liverpool and Man Utd fans go back and forth after the Uruguay game!

"We’re polishing off a defence argument." It appears bribery in Uruguay involves masturbatory favours.

Yeah, similar to what I've experienced. The Man Utd contingent getting plenty of stick prior to the tournament, why are Smalling/Jones in the squad etc? Then all quiet after Uruguay game when Gerrard had dropped a couple of ********.

If it was one of our players you'd get the same range of opinions.

Personally I think the elbow last night by Sakho is far worse, far more dangerous and should be punished accordingly. I had my nose broken by a flying elbow and its cowardly and dangerous.

That said, despite the fact that what Suarez hass done hasn't really hurt the player, he is going to do it again. Its hardwired in to him. If a 10 match ban previously isn't going to stop him then no length of ban is going to. Where I think it becomes a bigger issue is the duty of the game to protect its players. No one should have to do their job with the prospect that they might get bitten. Its unacceptable. So I don't know what you do. It sits at the heart of what justice should be - is it rehabilitate, to punish, or to protect people. The real shame is the people who will probably suffer most are the Uruguay and Liverpool fans.

But the OP is spot on, pretending it didn;t happen is nonsense.

I think he should be banned from football, club and country for two years. I understand that's the maximum punishment, and I think he should get it. It's his third offence of biting, once is bad enough, but three times shows he is probably going to do it again. This time he did it on the world stage in front of millions of kids. FIFA should set an example now. Add to the fact that he is a racist cheat, I don't think the game will be worse without him. Yes, he's a special talent - but there will be another great striker along soon enough.

Footballers with world class talent are treated like they are Gods. Paid more money than life saving doctors, soldiers that give their own lives, and when they get into ridiculous amounts of trouble with criminal actions they receive a different version of 'justice' than usual people do.

John Terry and Steven Gerrard both acquitted following legal defences the likes of which no ordinary man could expect. Chad Evans convicted of rape, sacked by his club, but then welcomed back into the same club on a multi million pound three year deal upon release.

For me, draw a line, kick him out of the game for a long as possible. Football is sickening, but until it addresses it's own moral code it will only continue to slide.

There's no defending him but at the same time there's no defending the idiots who talk about life bans & jail (Danny Mills I'm looking at you).

It seems that Liverpool fans think it's been over exaggerated, Man Utd fans want life bans / jail & unbiased, rational people just think he should get a longer ban than last time.

I think he should be hung, shot, burned, given the electric chair, abacinated, put to sleep, drowned, dropped off a cliff, eaten by a lion, have his liver pecked out, asphyxiated, nailed to a cross, fed to the birds, made into minced meat, have his arms pulled until they come off, have his eyes removed, made to watch Leeds, Wednesday, and Sheffield United on a loop, forever.

    All at once.

There are 4 million people in Uruguay. Somewhere, there must be one of them that isn't either thick as pig ****, blind or ignorant - but if there is, they've not been in the press yet...
