A step in the right direction. Would have been a more powerful statement to have done it before he retired, but it's still more than every other secretely gay football player is prepared to do.

the floodgates will open in the next couple of years, I don't think there's anything for a gay person to be afraid of these days. Anyone who has a homophobic attitude towards anyone that comes out will be the ones singled out.

Kin hell if he bucks like he smashes footballs... There'll be blokes walking round like John Wayne for rest of they're life's!

On a serious note tho good for him, others need to follow suit... Especially lads that are still laiking. Nothing to be ashamed of in this day and age!

There's loads of gay footballers, this is the bigger shock:

"Hitzlsperger has an interest in economics, in particular dynamic mechanism design, and while in England studied investment strategies, although he did not complete the course. He regularly visited the Bank of England to discuss finance with the bank's governor, Mervyn King, a lifelong Aston Villa fan."

Bet he had fun explaining that to Kieron Dyer and Rob Green.

Why? It is my opinion what they get up to in their own time is their own business, what has it got to do with you or I.

i think you misinterpreted what i was saying. it's got nothing at all to do with me. and i don't care either way. my point was, i hope this gives footballers more confidence, to be open about being gay.

My thoughts exactly - I really dont get this idea that its important that gay people come out and say so publicly - as you say whats it got to do with us
I couldnt car less what orientation our players have - its irrelevant - the only thing I care about is how they perform on the pitch - and at the moment they are not very good in fact I recon the Doncaster Belles could beat them

of course it's important. the fact that neither you or i care, is largely irrelevant. what's relevant is the amount of people who DO care. it's widely acknowledged that being gay is still very much taboo in the game and definitely in the dressing room. hitz said this himself, and even he has waited until he's retired, to do this.

living your life as a lie, because of what your team mates, your manager and the fans think, must be an absolute nightmare for gay footballers. i very much doubt that gay footballers keep quiet because it's no one else's business. i imagine they're keeping quiet through fear of how it could affect their career in the game.

They shouldn't if they don't want to. But if they do want to, if they don't want to hide who they are, they shouldn't be fearful of saying so, which I'm afraid is the situation we have at the moment.

This is worth reading if you missed it, hidden as it was in a mountain of, er, stuff.

Touch of arrogance on this thread.
It is no one else's business to make a judgement as to whether a gay person should come out or not.

I'm sure someone on this board was saying Robbie Ryan was the only gay footballer a few weeks ago...

More seriously the decision to come out or not is an individual one but it would be nice if people were making whatever decision they took based on what made them happy rather than fear as maybe seems the case.

You are right that it is non of our business.

However there are loads of racist, homophopic scum out there that will be sad that their intimidatiary behaviour has been in vain.

Thanks for that - no I didnt see it first time round and its probably the best post on the subject - I stand by what I said though

because to me personally it really isnt important - just as it isnt to Gordon Ottershaw and I assume you as well. But I can see the point that Gordon is making that unfortunately it is important because thats not how a large part of society sees things
