We played with 2 up front for the last 25 minutes and got outplayed and over run in midfield and Shrewsbury dominated us and got the winner. More strikers doesn't always equate to more attacking. The game should have been put to bed by half time, we were well on top and created numerous chances. Not sure why LJ took off Hourihane, he was our best player today. Scowen should have gone off for me, possibly his worst game in a BFC shirt. Nyatanga has to be at centre back next game, we look so disorganised in the centre of defence with him on the left. A lot of positives though aswell as a lot of things they will need to work on, the season is 6 games in and Barnsley will be pushing for a play off place at the end of the season I have no doubt about that.
Not when you take off your only two creative players. It was nothing to do with going two up front, it was what was behind them.
how about 2 up front but NOT taking off two of your most creative players including the one who produces the best crosses that would benefit the big fkr you've brought on! s
Doesn't help when Winnall was offside every 2 seconds. 2 up front especially in a 4-4-2 just doesn't work anymore especially if the plan is to play quick passing football. If the plan is lump crosses in and long balls then yes 4-4-2 is the answer but there's a reason why hardly any teams that formation anymore.
I think there's more to Smith than just a target man, 4-4-2 just isn't the answer for me. We played it under Danny last season and the football was diabolic.
Well 5-3-1 only works when you move the ball quickly and your midfield support the strikers. And it helps when your wide men can get forwards too. Playing a centre half at left back is madness.
I agree, for me the back four has to be Wabara/Bree - Roberts/Mawson - Nyatanga - Smith. I thought Harris looked dangerous when on but took the selfish option most times instead of crossing for Smith. It's a work in progress anyhow and there are positive signs. The game should have been out of sight by half time but we just didn't get going in the 2nd half and the concentration slipped horribly at the end which is inexcusable.
Shrewsbury planed 1 up front in Barnett with Cole and Clark playing off him from what I saw. Could be wrong though.
Watkins and Harris look pretty quick, Surprised Jackson didn't come on for Winnall near the end to offer more threat in behind but again I reiterate the game should have been won by half time if we had been more clinical. It's certainly a upgrade on the last two home league games when we weren't creating many chances.
I keep rewinding in my head back to that Middlesbrough pre season game. In the first half with Nyatanga in the middle we defended against them easily. He was replaced by Mawson or Roberts at half time and we fell apart completely. His experience is invaluable in the centre of the defence, the jump in quality that Roberts and Mawson are experiencing seems to catch them out at times and having Nyatanga alongside them at the heart of the defence would really help them I think.
Wheh I saw we were making 2 subs my initial reaction was that we'd replace winnall and Watkins with smith and Jackson!! Why the hell he took houraine and Crowley off is another question
