.......starting to look a teeny bit stupid now.

Those that thought everything is just hunky dory during January - saying things like........ 'it doesn't matter which players have gone - we are just one point off the play offs' .....they are just starting to realise you CANNOT build a team mid season

and those that think we could do anything about losing our players in January, and think that we as a club WANTED to have to rebuild a team in January look the daftest of all.

January was a disaster in my opinion and while we will end the season in mid table there will always be a question of 'what if' when we look back at this season.

Yeah because we are having such a crap season eh Nudger? What a disaster that we are in such a lowly league position.
The play offs were always a big ask, I think it was obvious to all and sundry that somebody fked up with the contracts and Hecky has already said as much and that they have learned from that.
We are now in a position where Hecky can experiment a bit, surely that's preferable to trying stuff at the start of a new campaign? ( hopefully y not against Brizzle or Washday) He can now in safety try players in different positions try different formations to get an idea who can actually do what and who and what we need .
How can people not see that.
Granted the OP was undoubtedly another attention seeking or fishing post but others have said similar

For me, What's done is done. We learn from it (hopefully) and move on. I'm happy with this season. I never had that feeling that we'd make the Play Offs, but who knows?
I'm more concerned about next year, which I think will be tougher. No impetus of promotion.
We need to be clever with how we see the season out, and be ready from the off next year.

"and Hecky has already said as much and that they have learned from that."

Correction - he says we HAVE to learn from it. No idea that we will but it could not be an issue next season anyway

.........yer right, we couldn't do anything about it.
And that's the point - there lies the problem.
We couldn't do anything about it because the directors had not planned for any eventuality.
That didn't happen so we had to sell.
In fact I was surprised that we retained as many as we did.

If we had got through January unscathed- maybe added one more player - we were 1 point (ONE POINT) off the playoffs - if we had got into the playoffs, which I think we would have......then....
......we would have won it !!!!

From what I've read about last night and from being at the game on saturday they could easily have been 2 wins. Fine lines, fine lines.

QPR had 2 efforts on target, Davies not to blame for either but otherwise a spectator. I think we might have been a tad unlucky.

Agree totally with this. Play offs were never realistic in my view. We will end the season comfortable and whilst the end of season games this year will be a tad anti climatic, I would have taken that at the start of the season.

Must admit, I am already worried about next season. Without doing the right things now to prepare, and without the right investment in the summer, I fear we will be next seasons's Rotherham.

I agree Nudge and the sooner our multi millionaire businessman owner starts listening to your ideas on how to get us into the premiership the better or the very least sit down with you on how to keep our better players when they are wanting a move. Have you tried setting up a meeting with him mate so you and your billionaire consortium can discuss a buy out?

Its been a great season. We have had a great few months of happiness in oceans of pain and mediocrity. Let's just celebrate that.

When you're seventh on 31st January, the play offs are (or should be) realistic whether you're Aston Villa, Burton Albion or Barnsley.

Problem is, we're back to the not failing is success attitude.

Even if we had kept Winnall and Hourihane I think we would have struggled to get many more points in our last 6 fixtures and so would have been slipping down the table a bit.

I still think we will finish in the top 10 this season - regroup in the summer and then see what happens. I think a top half finish in the championship in our first season back is success.
Finishing 21st would be "not failing". Look at where the other promoted sides Wigan and Burton are, either would swap us places in a heartbeat

Let's not forget, we just lost at QPR. We always lose at QPR. We even lost 3 times against them with the team that went into the premier league.

When you've just lost at a place where you've not won in 67 years, it's hardly the best time to say "I told you so".

Which teams should we be beating then? That lies the problem because after any defeat the happy clappers say we just lost to a bogey team, form team, team with more money, team with more experience or some other excuse. It's like they have no expectations and are just happy to tread water at this level. Whilst any of those reasons might be true we should still be thinking we can win because we are at the same level as them so for all their supposedly plus points they are no better than us.

Can't agree. We have made solid - make that exceptional - progress over the last 15 months. Even with our best squad from the start of January, the play-offs were a long-shot. We are where we are.

This debate seems a bit like Brexit. We have to accept the situation and get on with it. I voted remain and (if I had a say in it) I would have kept the players we lost in January. Both of these have gone against my wishes but I can't do anything about either. I'm sure that the club are well aware of the feelings about what happened in January but is powerless to do anything about it.

This season has been many times better than I or anyone else expected; no relegation battle, attractive and mostly successful football and a few notable noses bloodied. I don't think we could have asked for any more.
