sorry if it's been mentioned on here before but can't see a thread. now know that at least one of the four trapped miners is dead but they aren't able to retrieve his body so they don't know who it is. Absolutely terrible and especially since one of the 3 who escaped yesterday and is in hospital is the son of one of those trapped.
May God be with them, I hope the remaining men can get out. Thoughts and condolences with their families at this terrible time.
Re: Seconded Not looking good, if they have managed to stay dry and in an air pocket there is some hope. Fingers crossed for all.
Was listening to the radio in the car about 10 minutes ago. The 4 families are gathered together in the local community hall, still not knowing which one of them has lost a loved one. Can't imagine what they've gone through , especially as they have known for quite some time that there has been a fatality. My thoughts and prayers are with them all.
Well said, mate. I can't possibly imagine the trauma these families are going through. My heart goes out to them in this terrible situation.
I remember when there was an explosion at Houghton Main, mid 70`s , my uncle was working that day at the pit and my Gran was in a terrible state until he walked in the kitchen, I was only in my early teens then, but it reallty come back at times like this. This sounds very much like the Lofthouse disaster in early 70`s. Water ingress then too.
My late Father was buried alive twice when he worked down the pit. Thankfully, we were lucky enough to have him rescued on both occasions. However, after the second time, my late Mother insisted he left the industry, as she could no longer put up with the stress. I have always been respectful and full of admiration for miners, as there is no way I would have the testicular fortitude to do the job.
Kev, I never had the bottle either, I suffer from claustrophobia anyway so there was no was I was going down there. I have been down at the Mining Museum and that was scary enough for me.
You should try the Mining Museum mate , really interesting and informative. You dont have to go down the shaft, it is not far down anyway.
my grandad worked at Houghton main at that time as well, don't know how I would've coped but I suppose we should count ourselves lucky we'll never have to find out
My dad's cousin was killed at Lofthouse. Although he'd been brought up with my dad's family so was more like a brother to him. I remember going to the memorial service at Wakey cathedral. My dad got buried up to his neck at Grimey pit. Just going to the mining museum had me in tears thinking that was how my dad used to work. 2 found dead so far.....certainly not looking good. My heart goes out to the families.
