It probably cost more to prosecute them. What a complete waste of taxpayers money but I'm sure the benefits cheat is full of remorse.
Well why wouldnt you give them some jail the punisment dosnt send a message out to others not to do it
This kind of thing is what community service sentences are for. He/she should be told to do £25k worth of community work.
That's my view as well paying it back at £3 per week is a waste of everyone's time and will cost more to administer I bet he doesn't pay it anyway then what will they do
If they're on benefit they'll take it direct from benefit (including state pension) so quite easy. Presumably the case or would be more than 3 quid a week to pay back.
It would be far more in the public interest to go after the tax loop holes. Not condoning the crime of benefit fraud. There is a hell of a lot more unclaimed benefit than there is benefit fraud. The billions in unpaid taxes from big business that hmic write off, plus the favourable tax deals given to the elite 1% makes a mockery of cases like this one.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ties-member-public-400-000-benefits-scam.html two dozen here that have been fiddling benefits.
One of the main reasons I stopped being a Benefit Fraud Investigator. You would work on complex long running investigations and the sentencing was just a joke. It is seen as a victimless crime by the legal system. In terms of the offenders they usually have no assets (as you can seize them via the proceeds of crime act if they do) and imprisoning costs a bomb. Though in terms of repayment the title is somewhat misleading as that refers to court fines I'm presuming. There are mandatory repayments for those still receiving benefits that are deducted at source. When I stopped last year these repayments were 29, 70 per week Housing Benefit and 7.30 from council tax benefits. I presume they will have increased marginally by now (even at that rate you calculate some overpayment repayments in the 100s of years). If you are no longer receiving benefits you get a bill for the total amount. Then have to make an arrangement to pay based on your income.
