Im no economist, so forgive the delivery.
A clubs main income is via the football league from sky tv. So essentially if a club closed its doors then it could survive without any fans paying in to watch the games live.

Charging £30 for tickets means they get less fans than they would if say the price was £20. But if there were 5000 extra fans turning up then the club would need to pay more for staffing, stewarding and policing, eating away at the profit made on the tickets. The police cost has become such an issue for clubs of modest turnover like us that, filling the stadium with cheap seats no longer becomes cost effective due to the extra policing. Clubs can make less when getting 25k through the door with a ticket promotion, than they can with 15k at normal rate.

From the club point of view, it makes no financial sense to have more fans . Less people paying a premium is best for the club on a week to week basis.

All this is crap of course as we all know football is on a slippery slope, as they stop their future fans ever getting through the door at a young age. You Reds.
