Intending to drive over to Machester on Wednesday, setting off about 10 a.m. from Barnsley. Is Woodhead clear of road works and should I expect a hold-up at Tintwistle/Hollingworth?
I've just drove back on the A628 and roadworks are starting on weds for 4 weeks, they had the traffic lights on this afternoon already. Long delays in the week.
Drove to Mancheter yesterday, there are some roadworks with temp traffic lights but I only queued 5 mins.
Woodhead................one of the worst roads in the country Two of the biggest connurbations in the country joined together by a cart track Another bad road to consider is the A1 road between the M18 and the M62...............motorway with cars traveling at 100mph suddenly becomes a farm vechile access road with combine harveters and tractors plodding along at 20 mph. I think I will probably die on this road.
The speed limit on the A1 is now 100mph!!! Bugger me I always thought it was a maximum of 70 mph in this Country. Unless Nudger is speeding???
Drove that way on Saturday, set of roadworks at Penistone, and another half way down the pass. Also there was queuing at Tintwistle but it wasn't too bad, to say it was about half 10 on a saturday
I drive over to Greater Manchester several times a week and I always use the Holmfirth road. Head out of Barnsley past Silverwood and up towards Cliffe kennels then take a right at the roundabout and keep on that road for a couple of miles until you come to a major crossroads (with a petrol station on your right and a pub called the sovereign on your left). Take a left at this crossroads and just follow the signs for Holmfirth then Manchester. I have tried lots of different routes and IMO this is the best.
Thanks M.K. - Someone else thought this was the best road - may well give it a go - I'm heading for Warrington - hopefully not too difficult to get to the M65 from Greenfield.
You come to the same crossroads if you go out through Barugh Green & Cawthorne. Probably a few miles nearer by cutting the corner off.
