Don't really believe that story... ... having worked in server rooms. Admittedly, it gets very dry in them and fairly hot but the rule was no food and drink and certainly not corrosive coke anywhere near. I admit to having had bottled water once or twice when in the tech space for a long period of time when testing, for example, but it was always in a sports bottle with the closed cap, kept in a bag on the floor near the door and when drinking it was always a long way from the racks with no chance of any potential spillage reaching the underfloor cable runs or servers. Any idiot with coke near a server deserves sacking IMHO as it is not negligence but a wilful breach of protocol. Never worked with or heard of any pro computer tech who would do such a thing. Unlikely with RAID redundancy safeguards it would take a system down anyway!
Re: Don't really believe that story... Yep - used to work in computer ops, in the main computer room - mainframes, disk drives, servers etc....remember one evening one of the cleaners came in with a bucket of water, she couldn't take it out quick enough when we pointed out that there was loads of electrics under the floor.
Re: Don't really believe that story... Cleaners?? In a comms room?? Most of the ones I worked in (often on Govt contracts) never got cleaned (although you had to have MOD security clearance to get through the door AND sign the Official Secrets Act). Probably would be easier getting into Syria from the UK with a name like Mohammed than it was getting a swipe card and Pin. The form filling and vetting took ages and the questionnaire wanted to know details of every girl I had ever dated. Didn't even work for the MoD !!
